What?

POLO documentaries is a production company specialized in extraordinary stories about inspiring women. We create, promote, and distribute films focused on entrepreneurship, transformation, and art, emphasizing its social impact and empowering women in low and middle-income countries. Our preferred narrative technique is magic realism to convey emotions
and portray what are sometimes challenging realities with a touch of optimism.

Why?

Inspiration is an unconscious burst of artistic endeavour. It is the underlying driver of change, evolution, and greatness: the new gold of modern times, precious and rare. Our primary motivation is the belief that “The story of your life could inspire someone to rewrite their own.”
The main characters of the stories we want to tell have become entrepreneurs, trendsetters, and pioneers through hard work and self-realization. By showing their game-changing ideas through
this powerful tool —a documentary— we can spread and attract the support that some of these ideas require to be fully developed and/or implemented. Documentaries create emotional connections and feelings through pictures, words, and actions. These stories seek to challenge the audience’s attitude, knowledge, and behaviour and dare them to reflect, take action, dream, and be open to opportunities.

Who?

The producers of these documentaries will come from a pool of well-established and accredited film schools and academies in low and middle-income countries. So far, film academies in Lebanon, India, Brazil, Argentina, Kenya, and Morocco have shown interest in the initiative. Most of the productions will be made by female filmmakers and based on stories where the main character is a woman.
Commissioning films from the same countries in which the selected stories occur has several advantages:

  1. It lowers production costs, as the film crew does not need to take long-haul trips.
  2. Filmmakers know the place and the local culture.
  3. Local labour costs make filming more affordable.
  4. It encourages learning and builds local capacities for high-quality documentary
    production in the future
  5. It makes the project more sustainable in the long term, as producing and hiring locally brings more value for money

How?

There are two streams of films within POLO documentaries: Pure Inspiration and Call for Support.

Pure Inspiration
This production line aims to spread inspiring stories to inspire others (similar to TED). One example would be that of a young woman from Malawi, who, against all odds, let her natural entrepreneurial talent flourish and developed a modest business school of entrepreneurs to
teach youngsters how to launch their own businesses.

Call for Support

This production line aims to raise awareness and convene support to drive inspiring ideas to full fruition. The story of a young woman in Nigeria who created a process to improve the production of traditional (and very nutritious) moi-moi bean cakes would be an example of a
call-for-support documentary. It would showcase her invention, raise awareness, and, hopefully, attract support for the venture (e.g., from an industrial engineer willing to work pro bono, or a philanthropist willing to co-finance the project).

Beneficiaries

These documentaries are intended to amplify the protagonists’ voices so that they can reach an audience of millions. The documentary becomes a powerful beacon to attract the attention of those who can help realize the idea, generating a social impact on the protagonist’s environment
and beyond.

The viewers

POLO documentaries’ primary audience is individuals seeking inspiration to change their lives; interested in social matters and curious about the world and other cultures, they are concerned with contemporary topics such as gender inequality, racism, underdevelopment, and climate change. They want to support or invest in alternative ideas, out-of-the-box solutions with a social
impact.

Local filmmaking schools

POLO documentaries aim to create a vast network of high-quality filmmaking schools in low and middle-income countries. Our system of small grants, plus the possibility of continuity and access to a global broadcasting platform, should act as a powerful incentive for these schools and their filmmakers to participate.

Independent female producers

POLO documentaries seek to prioritize the engagement of female filmmakers and empower them to generate gender-specific content. Ideally, they are mid-career female filmmakers who have a story to tell but don’t have a specialized channel. We offer them the opportunity to broadcast inspiring stories of other women. We also provide financing, technical support, and learning experience.

Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome Dr Rana Al-Falaki from London as a guest contributor at Womenlines panel. As a leader in her field for over 20 years, a multi-award winning business owner, an international speaker and trainer, a researcher, a visiting professor to the Medical University of Taipei, editorial board member and peer reviewer of several journals, and a #1 international best-selling author Dr Rana is very much passionate about helping professionals in their leadership development. In her article of Womenlines Dr Rana is sharing insights she learnt about how to have impactful zoom meetings while interviewing (video above) image and presence consultant Marcella Scherer-

In a recent interview with image and presence consultant Marcella Scherer, she shared with me how to create the whole 360 effects when on a zoom call, you-tube video, virtual conference or any other online event.  If you want to make a good impression, it’s a lot more complex than just clothes and back-ground.  She covered four essential components to give you the edge and called it the ABCD of having a presence.

“You never know who will meet, and in online meetings, the senior management and CEO may be far more likely to be watching when previously they wouldn’t have” she goes to say “you only have 7 seconds to make 11 first impressions, which she explains are nano-judgements such as your gender, socio-economic status, intelligence, trustworthiness, likability being amongst them; having the edge on appearance is key – once you push past that first judgement, then you can use your other tools such as your voice, knowledge and experience to impress.”

1-  Appearance

For those sceptics who would prefer to resist dressing up for the boss, Marcella re-frames it as considering it to be just another tool in your tool-kit, and to use it to your advantage.  Some suggestions she makes to help you stand out are:

2-  Behaviour

“The way you do one thing, is the way you do everything,” she says, and that is what people will remember.  If you show up late, they may think, albeit wrongly, that you may not be timely on projects; if you show up messy, they may think you don’t care enough about the work either.  Some suggestions to come across well in those first seven seconds are:

3-  Communication

“55% is non-verbal and 7% verbal” she explains, “so how we hold our bodies says so much to people.” Some tips she shared included:

4-  Digital Presence

“When you show up fully competent and present, people notice and are drawn to you!” She continued, “Women in particular can seem to have it all going for them, looking great, but still not getting the attention on screen, which becomes even more of a challenge digitally.” This is where the energy work and working on yourself from within needs to done to be truly effective.  She shared some pre-meeting suggestions:

Marcella went on to explain that in order to have a truly powerful image and presence that allows you to be noticed, it  has to come for the inner work, and that will radiate through.  This included identifying your fashion values, your goals and be completely clear on what you want.  She does a fun exercise with her clients called the million dollar style and vision board exercise, which not only identifies what and how to style yourself with the best hair, make-up and most flattering clothes, but also exactly how you want to be feeling and the effect you wish to have on others.

“As a  leader or high level executive, we have to have these soft skills to accompany our leadership and presence.  It is a really important piece, that in fact is not fluffy, nor superficial.  The little details can say so much about a person.” She summarised.

So may other wonderful ideas and concepts were shared during our time together about what a wardrobe says about a person and her own leaps of faith to pursue a life with purpose.

Her own story is one steeped in experience in the fashion industry and being open and prepared to take risks.   She had been a ballet dancer, and surrounded by the world of fashion and body image which impacted her calling.  Without a doubt, helping people the way she does shines through her so passionately; if anyone has digital presence, it is certainly her.

Dr Rana Al-Falaki helps women re-ignite and exude passion to turn wanting into having by being more and doing less.  She believes adamantly in the three words of her podcast and video series – be free, be fun, be fearless.  You can connect with her via her website
