Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome Matuli Madhusmita Swain, an author, speaker, life coach from India, as a guest contributor at Womenlines. Matuli has shared her insightful thoughts which can help you to design your career like an entrepreneur via strategizing the marketing initiatives that help you to scale up your business goals and find the individual media voice too.

A career is like an evolving love story, one that comes with its own set of learning, growth, loss, lessons, and success. However, looking at the report from ILO (International Labour Organization) outlook, women have it much tougher to find and retain gainful employment and thrive as leaders. As the ILO website states, the current global labour force participation rate for women is close to 49%. For men, it’s 75%. That’s a difference of 26 percentage points, with some regions facing a gap of more than 50 percentage points. ( https://www.ilo.org/infostories/en-GB/Stories/Employment/barriers-women#global-gap)

While the debate continues as to how the world can become more equitable towards women; for those who are in the workforce, having an entrepreneurial bent of mind can be a great way to manage and maintain sustained career growth. Here are a few pointers to get you started-

SWOT yourself out:

An entrepreneur knows her SWOT to the last detail. SWOT analysis is more than jotting down one’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. It is a blueprint for career growth and career management. If you are an entrepreneur or a salaried employee, make sure to sit with yourself and make an honest assessment of your skills, talents, and temperament. The more self-aware you are; the better decisions you can take to ensure your success is organic, strength-based, and not a need-based response to the external environment. It pays to remember that while others may rejoice in your success, only you have to do the work to ensure it. A self SWOT will help you stay on course.

Design Your Potential:

Entrepreneurship thrives on taking proactive, strategic design steps to chalk out future opportunities. Women professionals thrive on being diligent task-masters though designing our potential isn’t always taught to us. Designing your potential means evaluating your career choices pro-actively in advance and then spacing out, aligning one’s potential to it. This helps to stay focused and know which opportunities truly offer growth and stability, for sustained career progress.

Quantify Your Impact:

Results speak for themselves. The best way to boost self-confidence, develop mental fortitude and validate your achievements is to be able to quantify your results. Numbers can be scary but they are equally nurturing as well. If you can quantify your achievement in terms of revenue generated, time saved, eye-balls grabbed, money saved, or earned – it will help you forward yourself for newer and better opportunities. Next time you take up a project, ask yourself how your skills and attitude can be quantified into a result.

Advertise Yourself:

The world is waiting for you to show up. Advertise yourself, unabashedly. Social media has opened up a world of collaboration. It does seem really scary at first, but with small steps, you can lean into your own power. All businesses, big or small advertise to their potential clients and collaborators. The idea is to make it easier for your tribe to find you and connect with you. Explore and expand your career dimensions by sharing your insights and achievements. It is worth it.

Invest in Yourself:

Business development is an integral part of entrepreneurship. Likewise, think like one when you design your career. Invest in yourself. Upskill or even train yourself to pick up random courses, which help you break the monotony of work. The brain is a fantastic tool, which craves safety but thrives on challenges. Find your balance point and never shy away from making yourself your best bet. Because you are.

Though there are certainly many challenges faced by women in business face, there are plenty of positive facts to focus on too. We can also find many examples of businesswomen and entrepreneurs who are enacting significant changes, supercharging their careers, and helping to shape the future of business.

We often see women are less likely to self-promote or self-advocate at work, usually through fear of receiving a negative response is making them lag behind. One of the research finds that this is the case even when there is no gap inability of performance between men and women, which can not be overlooked.

There are much more things that need to be done to ensure that women are not only given equal opportunities to start their own businesses but that they also feel empowered enough to do so. But, now our business landscape is changing. COVID-19 pandemic aside, attitudes towards ‘traditional’ ways of doing business are changing.

Here are just some ways that how women in business are shaping their future-

#1 By Bringing new innovation – There are pieces of evidence from the big corporates that, women’s creative minds have been very profitable to their business, as they have the power and influence in the business on a world level. Their innovative fresh ideas have helped a lot in their own as well as other companies.

#2 Adding a new approach to leadership – The representation of women in business and leadership roles is still an issue, but it has been improving in recent years. The best part of this is women in these positions bring with them a unique set of skills and competencies that can help to enact change.

#3 Changing social norms – It is said that some of the major factors behind the persistent gender gap are harmful social norms and stereotypes about women and men. For filling this gap the only solution is that as more women enter and succeed in businesses and more female entrepreneurs create change, these social norms will shift.

1)Please share about yourself….what makes you uniquely you?

Ans. I think every human is so individual, has their own life experiences and that is what makes us all unique. I believe that my personal uniqueness comes from the ability and willingness to always learn not just about my profession, but about the world! I know that I know nothing, but I also know that I know more today than I knew yesterday!

2) As an entrepreneur how has been your journey? Please share some insights, learning, ups and downs and some lessons which helped you to grow your business!

Ans. I have been a freelance graphic and web designer for the past 15 years, most of my clients come as referrals. I have also worked in the corporate world and now run my own business, where I empower coaches and speakers through visual online branding! I believe that each of us has potential, we just need to match that to the online world we share with each other now!

3) What is the secret behind your leadership. You are an achiever and a leader in your field. Can you share a few ladder steps you have taken which helped you to become a leader? This can be helpful to women who want to achieve their dreams.

Ans. The secret is very easy – it is taking action, always learning, applying the knowledge. If we do not take action and personal responsibility, who will?

4) What is your vision and dream now?

Ans. My vision is for each person on planet earth to live in a thriving society, where we do not have hunger, poverty, human trafficking, where each human life is the highest value and we all are able to use our abilities and talents to benefit our global society! 5) Please share a message with the Womenlines audience. I want every woman to recognize that we all have inner spark and power inside of us to make this world a better place and that by uniting our potential we can reach new heights and make sure that each life is protected as one’s own!

Reese Witherspoon an American actress, producer, and entrepreneur and is now on the list of the world’s most powerful women of 2021 by Forbes! Women entrepreneurs can learn so much from Reese Witherspoon’s Success in Hollywood!

The recipient of various accolades, including an Academy Award, Golden Globe Awards, a British Academy Film Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award, Reese is one of the highest-paid actresses in the world. Time magazine has named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2006 and 2015.

As Reese was getting frustrated with the roles she was getting, she started her own production company, Pacific Standard, in 2012. Through Pacific Standard, she has delivered major hits like ‘Gone Girl’ and ‘Wild.’ In 2016, Reese partnered with Otter Media, a division of AT&T’s WarnerMedia, to launch Hello Sunshine, which focuses mainly on female-driven stories. It now operates a book club, audio programming with Audible, two podcasts, a video-on-demand channel with DirecTV and is collaborating with Apple. A Blackstone-backed media company is purchasing a majority stake in Hello Sunshine in August 2021, valuing it at $900 million.

Lessons Female Entrepreneurs can Learn from Reese’s Success

1. Focus on finding a solution to the problem you are facing in your work

Reese was told once by her finance manager that she should start saving for her future more as she won’t be earning much later part of her life. Instead of sulking, Reese started putting efforts into finding the solution and unleashed the entrepreneur version of herself by starting a production house. Women in business once start focussing on getting the solution to the problems they are facing will have to face fewer challenges to overcome.

2. Be bold to take risks in Business

While running her production house business, Witherspoon challenged herself in 2013 by launching a fashion brand ‘Draper James’, a Southern-inspired clothing and home line, with a flagship store in Nashville. Female entrepreneurs have to work upon their appetite to take risks in their businesses.

3. Be confident enough to say NO to things you don’t believe

Reese’s production house Hello Sunshine never took funding from major studios because they never agreed to the idea of making more than one women-centric movie. Witherspoon was confident enough to say no, and so far it seems like she has taken the right decisions. Females in business can learn to follow their intuition once they start saying no to things they are not comfortable doing.

4. Dig deep in what you are passionate about

This is a golden lesson to be learnt by female entrepreneurs! When things aren’t working the way they should in your business, turn to your comfort zone and focus your energy on something that you are having a passion for. With Witherspoon, her love for reading helped her when she was not getting her dream roles. She started her own production house and started making movies on the stories which she enjoyed reading most. Every woman in business should be aware about one thing she is crazily passionate about

5. Collaboration is the key

Reese started her own production house and thus also create multiple opportunities for countless other women like other actresses, directors, the authors writing her book club picks. Witherspoon highlights the importance of collaboration over competition which is quite reflected in her collaboration with Nicole Kidman for making the hit series Big Little Lies. Power to collaborate shows that you are very well aware of your skills and weaknesses and open to working together with others to achieve a bigger vision. Females in businesses should be having big heart to collaborate with others.
