ZAAMMUS – ZAALOUK + HUMMUS DIP

Ingredients:

Zaalouk

Hummus

METHOD

Zaalouk

• Remove 3 vertical strips of skin from each aubergine. Discard the vertical strips and dice the aubergines in large cubes. Removing a few stripes allows keeping the zaalouk softer (less skin) when prepared, however, feel free to leave them if desired.

• In a medium-sized pan, heat the olive oil and add all the ingredients. Cover over medium-low heat until the vegetables are soft, about 25 minutes. Stir occasionally to make sure the vegetables don’t stick to the pan.

• Uncover, mash the vegetables, and leave over medium heat until all liquids evaporate.

• Refrigerate until needed, up to two days.

Hummus

• Place the drained chickpeas and the baking soda in a large deep skillet over medium heat. Cover the chickpeas with water. Leave until the chickpeas are soft and cooked, this will take about 30 to 40 minutes.

• Once cooked, drain the chickpeas, place them in a food processor along with the rest of the ingredients, and process until you obtain the desired smoothness.

• Add more water to adjust the consistency if desired.

• Refrigerate until needed, up to two days.

A successful business has to be involved, it has to be fun, and it has to exercise its employee’s creative instinct. For any workplace, it is very essential to take care of their employee’s comfort zone too, as they are putting efforts to make your business grow. With this comes the concept of “Breakroom” at the workplace.

This concept is very prominently seen in the American work culture, which is now been followed by others too. You need to understand the major reason behind it, which is ultimately profitable to your business.

Our team has researched and come across 7 major features/benefits of breakroom at the workplace:

  1. It is a place where you can relax, rejuvenate, and can get refreshed, after working for long hours.
  2. The best part of this place is, here people from other departments can also get a chance to interact.
  3. Also, it is considered to be a good place to have an open communication between the executive and those working for them.
  4. It is considered to be a place, which gives you and your colleagues a sense of community.
  5. It is good to take a break, which ultimately balance you and your mental state.
  6. Providing breakroom at workplace, attracts more young talents.
  7. By this, you are providing a healthy living atmosphere in your company, which keeps your employees happier, and focused.

So, looking at all these benefits of the breakroom, companies who haven’t yet given a thought to it, should definitely try to figure out, and provide even a small-sized place like this to their hard-working employees. The more your employees are comfortable at the workplace, the more will be the output, the more will business will grow.

Ayo Sokale is a motivational speaker on a mission, to improve corporate equality, sustainability, and social responsibility. With a successful career in civil engineering, we sat down with Ayo to discover the secret to her career growth and how she engages audiences as a presenter. From inclusion to plastic consumption, do not miss our official Q&A with the social justice champion, Ayo Sokale.

What do diversity and inclusion mean to you and why are they important?
“Diversity and inclusion mean bringing a range of people together, regardless of their differences. This could be racial, ethnic, social, economic, geographic, academic, or whatever.
“I think inclusion is the most important factor. Inclusion means to make sure people can fully take part as their best selves. For example, an organization could have a diverse range of people, however, without making the environment more inclusive, it doesn’t allow employees to really embrace their job or show up as their best selves.
“Here’s an example. You may hire a new person and they may be a wheelchair user, but your office plan has narrow walkways and a lack of accessibility. This means you’ve got a diverse workplace, but it’s not inclusive to that person’s needs and therefore they can’t show up as their best selves.
“They come to work thinking about how they’re going to maneuver around the office, how they’re going to move around meetings. And this means they’re not able to show up in the ways we want people to. We want people to show up in their best way, where they feel included and nurtured.”
What are some small changes individuals could make in their everyday lives to live more sustainably?
“I’m one of the Institution of Civil Engineers’ water superheroes – I’m called Ego Angel!
“Here are some top tips to live more sustainably. Having a shorter shower makes a huge difference to water consumption. Secondly, why not walk or cycle [to work]? It is a fantastic way to look after your health while also looking after the planet.
“Why not switch your plastic products for better reusable options? Switch your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo one, your plastic bag for a reusable one, or even your shampoo and conditioner bottles for bars.
“They work just as effectively!”
As an experienced freelance presenter, what is the key to effective communication?
“As a freelance presenter, I think the key to effective communication is understanding your audience. Who is your audience and what are you trying to convey to them? If they’re an audience of my peers, I’d probably [present] very differently compared to an audience of secondary school kids!
“Once you know who your audience is, you have to understand the context of your speech – who’s speaking before you? Where are you in the line-up? Is it before lunch and people are completely zoned out? How do you need to really engage the audience to make sure they take on board the message you want to convey?
“Also, make sure you slow down! Calm down and ensure you speak as authentically as possible. People know when you’re speaking from [the heart] and they know when you’re not. And I think if you really want to engage people, you’ve got to start by engaging them in you.”
What is the secret to your career growth?
“The secret to my career growth? I don’t think there’s any particular secret to career growth, but I do credit three things and one of them is clarity. It means asking the question, ‘what does career success look like to me?’. I think it is so important because if you understand your goals, you actually have a better chance of achieving them.
“This leads me nicely to number two: growth. With a growth mindset and a clear goal in mind, you can then evaluate your skills, your knowledge, or your experience, and then you can assess where you are and what you need to do to get to where you want to be.
“And finally, I do think reflection is critical. In my early career as a graduate civil engineer, I really threw myself into reflecting and thinking about what I was learning. I think this is really, really pertinent. We would write these quarterly reports, and it would allow me to understand the technical part of the project and what I was gaining from them – what are the tangible lessons learned, and what do I need to do in the future as a result?
“I think all of this allows you to really embrace the learning process and make it more effective. Without it, you can’t get the most out of your growth experience.”

Womenlines guest contributor Maiye Waller from North CarolinaUnited States, is sharing this month about a fundraising event ‘First Annual Masquerade Benefit Ball’ which is upcoming on November 14th, 2021 at 7:30 by her organisation ‘The Mace Anthony Williamson Foundation and The Loss Group Project’ in Florida. This event is going to celebrate survivors of Domestic Violence, Loss, Homelessness, Suicide (a friend, a family member of the victim, or even have a story of surviving their own attempt)!

Empowering The Community Through Unity

As we wrap up October, the year is just about to kick off what we know is the busiest time of the year. The Holidays. Regardless of Covid 19, We can’t forget about the two most important holidays of the year, Thanksgiving and Christmas. With these wonderful times often come those tough times. Some people don’t have a big family, some people don’t have a family at all, some people have family, but it doesn’t feel like it. I personally know some people who may have a small social circle or even lack opportunities for socialization due to their work or children. Whatever it may be, no one deserves to be alone or depressed during this time of the year. We commonly speak on togetherness and giving during these times. This year more than ever we should be coming together. There has been a rise in Suicides and Domestic Violence cases since the start of Covid here in the US. “The increased incidence of psychosocial problems, exacerbation of pre-existing psychiatric disorders and fear of infection, uncertainty, isolation, unemployment, stress and mass panic have all contributed to one of the most concerning causes of mortality: suicides” (World Health Organization, 2020).

Now, as many of you’ll have read previously, I speak a lot about my son Mace. He was born right on time! I say that because it was my favorite time of the year! The Holidays. But after I lost him, I realized that those same holidays would now be dreadful. I only dreamed of what these times of the year would be like for us. I barricaded myself in my apartment. I didn’t celebrate the holidays like I used to. I was away from my family, and I honestly wasn’t in the best place at the time to just book a flight and go home. The Holidays were beginning to feel like the longest, darkest, most isolating time of the year.
As the years went on and I went on to find joy and light again, those holidays got a little easier to handle. However, I still have my moments. I know that anyone who has experienced a loss of any kind can relate to that feeling.
With Covid 19 hitting us how it did last year and still being ever so present, we need to come together. Covid has caused a huge rift in the socialization that we are so used to, the togetherness that we all need most.

As Leaders, we have to also let the members of our community, (the survivor) know that they are not alone and that there are resources out there for them. There are organizations that have events that are mainly about bringing the community together and showing them that we are all better united than divided. It’s not hard to pick up someone when you see them down. One of the best ways to help deal with isolation and depression during the Holiday season is to reach out to friends or family for support or get involved in your community.

This month, The Mace Anthony Williamson Foundation and The Loss Group Project will bring the community together for our First Annual Masquerade Benefit Ball on November 14th, 2021 at 7:30 pm. This fundraising event will be celebrating survivors of Domestic Violence, Loss, Homelessness, Suicide (a friend, a family member of the victim, or even have a story of surviving their own attempt). If you are here to tell the story, you made it! You are a survivor. I felt this event was a need in our community but more importantly before the Holiday isolation or depression can hit. If you would like to join us and our partners for this event, please follow the links below. I have also listed the SUICIDE PREVENT HOTLINE phone number as well as the DOMESTIC VIOLENCE hotline. If you would like to learn more about The Mace Anthony Williamson Foundation please visit our website.

Unlock some tips on how to promote female leadership shared by Womenlines guest influencer, leadership coach Ela Staniak – Founder of Feminine Leaders from Australia. In this article, Ela is sharing insights about how to develop self-leadership!

As I am beginning to write this I can feel the excitement rushing through my veins! My intention behind creating this piece is to paint an objective picture with my artistic paintbrush of a core issue behind UNDERPERFORMING LEADERS & TEAMS.

I refuse to do any finger-pointing as we already practise that enough..

It is common in our society to sit in state of disempowerment and blame external factors for the lack of OUR RESULTS. It shows in our language: it’s the economy, it’s the location, it’s the employees, it’s bad relationships, it’s the weather, it’s lack of money.

Is it really what is going on?

I prefer to be on the front line of a solution.

It is safe to say that most of us sooner or later either experience poor leadership directly or indirectly in the workplaces or at least know somebody who has/ still is.

Why?

Because it is really common. According to Gallup “The single greatest cause for employee disengagement? Poor leadership.” Not to mention that pandemic highlighted all weak areas in the workplaces and in our homes.

Because many business owners and managers underestimate what it takes to:

You may think: “HOLY MOLY! That’s a lot to grasp!”.

It is. Leadership is very complex. Neglecting one or more components of leadership development will have significant effect on the most important aspect of any business – its PEOPLE.

Let’s dive in deeper!

“Leadership is lifting a person’s vision to high sights, the raising of a person’s performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations.”—Peter Drucker

Too many businesses are built on a mindset “I am just going to launch my business, hire great people, and make tons of money”

If it was only so easy…

Estimates are that one in three new small businesses in Australia fail in their first year of operation, two out of four by the end of the second year, and three out of four by the fifth year. OUCH!

What is the REAL REASON behind some of the biggest issues we talk about today in the workplaces, real issues beyond lack of sales and marketing, issues like discrimination, lack of diversity and inclusion, increasing number stress-related conditions and mental illness, high employee turnover?

What is the fundamental reason behind Poor Leadership and Poor Performance?

It is lack of priority of education in CONSCIOUSNESS GROWTH & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT.

Let me bring up two pieces of data to back up my loving article before I move into a solution based conclusion.

According to Harvard Business Review “Corporations are victims of the great training robbery. American companies spend enormous amounts of money on employee training and education—$160 billion in the United States and close to $356 billion globally in 2015 alone—but they are not getting a good return on their investment. For the most part, the learning doesn’t lead to better organizational performance, because people soon revert to their old ways of doing things.”

According to a 2020 report by Grand View Research, Inc. personal development market is predicted to be worth $56.66 Billion By 2027.

Data shows that we continue investing billions of dollars worldwide in education and training but we do not always achieve desired outcomes.

It was quite entertaining to hear from one of my female clients who is in a senior role in an organisation in Australia, of how she participated in a Leadership & Performance Training once upon a time where the participants were advised on how to dress appropriately for the work environment.

I am pretty sure you can google this topic thoroughly. If you wish to explore further I am going to send you to this article https://www.thetrendspotter.net/business-attire-for-women/ ..which, by the way, I just googled ?

Enough of laughter, let’s get serious.

People always “revert to old ways of doing things” without having a strong plan of implementation, accountability and ongoing support structures.

You may wonder WHY is that?

It’s because our subconscious behavioural drivers are much stronger than any short term breakthrough you may experience even during the most transformational event or a program.

You can walk on fire, climb the tallest tree, abseil from the tallest building, hug a stranger or do anything that puts you outside of your comfort zone and helps you to expand your capabilities, and it’s not guaranteed that this will help you create SUSTAINABLE & MEASURABLE changes in identity and behaviour.

These activities may help you increase your confidence, help you believe in yourself a little more, or help you break through some of your fears.

In times of high stress or pressure, we automatically revert to our default stress-resolving mechanisms because without better internal resources like RESILIENCE, GRIT, STAMINA, TRUST, INCLUSIVENESS and EMPATHY our brain will search for ways to move away from the stressor based on our basic survival instinct. This is where we revert to what we know, rather than implementing what we learned.

We have a natural default circuitry in our brain where being in known space provides us with a sense of safety and not knowing future outcomes creates uncertainty. Our brain is constantly creating rules that can predict how the world works. In the process, our adrenals produce noradrenaline which improves brain fluidity but also makes us feel edgy. Our brain becomes more fluid so it can create a brand new set of rules (beliefs and meanings) to get out of uncertainty as soon as possible. See uncertainty is uncomfortable and so KNOWING and LIVING IN A STRUCTURED WORLD gives us safety – less edginess. More comfort.

The activities mentioned earlier do not provide the tools needed to SELF-DEVELOP, PROGRESS and SUSTAIN the changes.

What we do need to do is:

What I just described is the scope of my Self-Leadership System which I designed specifically for those people who are ready, willing and OPEN to expanding VERTICALLY (consciousness) and HORIZONTALLY (skills and capabilities), people who have a desire to be EXCEPTIONAL LEADERS, TOP PERFORMERS and create INSPIRING results.

Self-Leadership is a complete state of empowerment, feeling in charge; an ultimate sense of self-love and self-respect; an ability to execute high-level decisions and action and produce consistent results aligned with integrity and values; 100% self-belief.

Let’s shift our attention from focusing on a problem or what isn’t working to CREATING new approaches in the workplace and in our personal life.

Great Leadership & Performance begin with equipping ourselves with greater insight and knowledge first, implementing new learnings to allow PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL GROWTH so we can then transfer those learnings onto others.

If you desire to lead and live THE ULTIMATE LIFE I highly recommend you do the inner work and discover the heights of your human potential.
