Womenlines as the digital marketing partner for the talk ‘Find Your Healthy Balance’ by registered dietitian Ujjwala Baxi, at Myras@ Stadium, Singapore, on 29th July, sharing key points from the talk. Talk emphasized on the role of nutrition in maintaining health-

Enlightening and Informative- two words will best describe the talk delivered by Dietitian Ujjwala Baxi on 29th July in Singapore!

Ujjwala is a passionate dietitian who wants to create awareness in people that they should regard their health as wealth. She says that “Good health  is all about mindfulness in life about what you eat, in what mood you eat and how much you eat.”Her tagline for her venture itself is so inspiring ‘Poshan -Cure thru Diet- Be a healthier version of yourself!’

Key points from the talk-

1. Get mindful of your sugar intake per day. Not only direct sugar but indirectly also we consume sugar from other food sources. This will help you to eliminate that food from your diet which provides you higher sugar content.

2. Develop the habit of always reading the ingredients of the product you are buying. Especially for kids, you should be aware of what type of sugar is there, are there many such ingredients like enzymes, MSG, emulsifiers which can harm your kid’s health.

3. Get mindfulness regarding not to heat cooking oil till smoking point. Also never grill or roast till the food turns near to black as it is carcinogenic and can lead to cancer.

4. Plan the amount of your food intake as per your daily activity. If you have a sedentary day you can reduce the food portion accordingly. But if you have a hectic day then you can go for high energy food like a banana.

5. Stop experimenting with so many varieties of bread available in the market. Go for choice in the wholemeal range of bread.

6. While planning food for the family you should think about getting the high cellular level energy after eating it. Create awareness regarding which food products provide what level of cellular energy in the body.

The whole sharing was incredible and it was a great learning session for the participants. Participants got a chance to get their hair analysis and energy levels checked at booths of Epigenetic and Energia. Kavita from Fitpro carried out a very interesting session of exercises at the beginning of the talk.

Participants received goody bags with many gifts and discounted vouchers sponsored by the sponsors at the event!

Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome Underneath the Pink Umbrella as a guest contributor on Womenlines panel. Underneath the Pink Umbrella is a student in Singapore and feels strongly about women issues. This month she is sharing the lessons about  the changing objectives of advertising in present times-

Underneath the Pink Umbrella: We see them everywhere we look, they have taken over our lives and unless you become a hermit, they are nearly impossible to avoid. Advertisements, or be it any form of promotion, why has every beauty brand suddenly more conscious of being inclusive? Read more to understand my perspective on it-

Each magazine has the Fashion and Beauty section, which despite proclaiming ourselves to be feminists, can’t help but devour each fashion crime and success. These pages are filled with idolized ideals embodied within our idols. They have everything; we aspire to be like them. Yet, how is it that we never seem to reach that standard of beauty?

The standards of beauty are even more fickle than my opinion when I go shopping. And if you talk to my best friend, you would tell you that she has stomped out of a store because of my indecisive nature. There seem to be “Game Changers” each month. And in some magazines, even every week!

Recently, a powerful conversation that has been initiated by the youth is: what is beautiful?

Does the standard of beauty depend on something that is dictated, prescribed, or what the next trend is? Historically, the standard of beauty has evidently shifted every decade. With a new look, and style of clothing that is characteristic of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, is having a resurgence. With the industry being one of the fastest paced ones, it is both the creator and follower of trends.

With the trends themselves being so difficult to predict, they are influenced by many factors such as social, political, economic, and consumer tastes and preferences. Looking at simply one of them: social, we can see how advertising in fashion is affected by it.

Nowadays there is an increasing acceptance of different body types and hence many body positive adverts are being created. Previously, calling people fat would not be looked down upon, as it made it seem that the ‘fat’ person would be more concerned about their health. This change I believe was only possible when body activists such as Ashley Graham vocalized their thoughts that other people started questioning the stringent standards of beauty.

With social media abuzz with body advocates and body shamers, the beauty industry could identify the change and see new marketing opportunities. At the end of the day, why would businesses waste money on unprofitable ventures, such as employing “average” looking models to sell their product, when it might not be consistent with their brand image and have a poor response. The business caters to society’s needs, and when society’s needs change, what reason would they have to oppose it? (Besides increasing costs etc.)

Brands such as Forever 21 have a Forever21 Plus brand as well. Yes, they do use plus-size models, and with inclusivity at such a high, could it be more than the “in thing”, or is the beauty industry actually undergoing a paradigm shift? The number of ‘likes’ on a photo could just be easy enough to track consumer reception of the use of plus-size models. The thin models get more likes, as simple as that. It is more appealing to the eye, and that is why, it would indeed take a long time for the word beautiful, to be applicable to all types of people. The Western ideals of beauty have long been ingrained in our psyche, which makes it difficult to perhaps accept the change.

Why is it so sudden, that the advertising campaigns of businesses are more body conscious, and not using traditional Caucasian models? It is because we as an audience are now more perceptive to the changes.

Conclusion: It is economical. Consumers are given what they want by the businesses, and businesses are looking to find new things that people want. Right now, people want businesses to be more ethical, inclusive, compassionate and accepting. This is leading us to a better world because finally, it is profitable to be human.

Underneath the Pink Umbrella:

Hey! I am currently a freshman studying business; quite boring you might think, right? But I’m passionate about it! Besides that, I’m passionate about women’s rights, which is a topic that has been debated for centuries. A historian and artist, I try to research the story behind everything and imbue creativity in whatever I do. My contributions will show you my stance on women’s issues and offer a historical background and a fresher and more relatable perspective on the world and the women around you.

Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome Meenu Agarwal, founder of Food ‘n’ Wellness, a food, and nutrition advisory company based out of Singapore on Womenlines panel of influencers. This month she is sharing about types of cooking oils and benefits-

Quite often, in the rush of fretting over whether to choose raw salads over green juices or deciding whether fish is a better protein choice than lean poultry, we end up missing out on the importance of the basics—the cooking oils for example. But the oil that you choose to sauté your vegetables in, or drizzle over your salad, might as well be considered the fundamentals of healthy cooking. For most, awareness about cooking oils is limited to using refined vegetable oils in place of butter or ghee (clarified butter). There’s a lot more to know that the occasional usage of olive oil in your food.

The term, “Fatty Acids” are components that oils or fats are made up of. The three main types of fatty acids are Saturated Fatty Acids (SUFA), Mono-unsaturated Fatty Acids (MUFA) and Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFA). The chemical bonds of each of these types affect both the process of cooking as well as your health. All fats contain all of these types but are usually known by the name of the fatty acid type that is the predominant component in it. For example, butter is predominantly made up of saturated fatty acids and so is called a saturated fat.

Other examples of Saturated fats are Margarine, ghee, coconut oil, palm oil, vanaspati (vegetable shortening) and lards. They are solid at room temperature and have a very high smoking point and hence ideal for high heat cooking. However, high consumption of saturated fats can elevate cholesterol levels thereby increasing risks of heart diseases.

Monounsaturated fats are olive oil, peanut oil, safflower oil and corn oil. They are liquid at room temperature but turn semi-solid in the refrigerator. They are definitely a healthier choice over saturated fatty acids in terms of keeping cholesterol levels in control.

Oils like canola, sunflower and walnut are Polyunsaturated fats and they are always in a liquid state, even inside the refrigerator. They are also heart-friendly fats and keep cholesterol levels in check. However, they have an extra edge over others. Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are types of PUFAs that are particularly good for health, and omega 3 improves heart health as well.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the average intake of fat should be 30% of your total caloric intake and there should be a balance of approximately 30% saturated fat, 33% polyunsaturated fat, (containing essential fatty acids) and 37% monounsaturated fat.

Smoking Points and why it is important-

Although a red signal for cholesterol levels, there is a reason why saturated fats are sometimes preferred. They have very high smoking points, which means that they are highly resistant to heat and therefore do not oxidize in high heat. When fats oxidize, they react with oxygen and form free radicals and compounds that are harmful to the body. However, it is advisable to use natural saturated fats like ghee, butter, coconut or palm oils instead of hydrogenated fats.

Here are the synopses of the nutrient content of some of the most commonly used oils:

Olive oil: A definite health fad in present times, it is a monounsaturated fat that has a rich flavour and is also palatable uncooked on salads, bread and steamed vegetables. Extra-virgin olive oil is also high in heart-friendly antioxidants called polyphenols.

Canola oil: A monounsaturated fat, it is preferred mainly for its neutral flavour and is often mixed with other nutrient-rich oils like olive oil to get the benefits of the latter yet maintaining a less strong taste. It also has a high smoking point and hence is ideal for baking and frying.

Sesame oil: Used mainly in Asian cooking, it is high in both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. It has a distinct nutty flavour that works well for both salad dressings and for cooking.

Mustard oil: It is considered the healthiest oil for the heart and research has found that chances of heart diseases have gone down by 70% with its usage. It has even been touted as healthier than olive oil and has the lowest amount of saturated fats, no trans-fat, high mono-unsaturated fats, high polyunsaturated fatty acids such as omega3 and omega 6, antioxidants and vitamin E and the Alpha-linolenic acid that decreases the risk of a heart attack.

Rice Bran oil: Extracted from the germ and inner husk of rice, it might be the best balance of all essential factors required in a healthy cooking oil. It comes the closest to the ideal balance ratio of SUFA, MUFA and PUFA at 24:42:32 and has a high smoking point. It is a source of many vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids and antioxidant nutrients like oryzanol, tocotrienols phytosterols, that collectively work against cancer and infection-causing germs and free radicals and improve the immunity system.

Womenlines welcomes its first Shutterbugs Guest Influencer Gunjan Swarup, founder of  The Wishbone Affair for photography in Singapore, at Womenlines.

Enjoy the wonderful thoughts sharing by Gunjan and lovely series captured by her of beautiful, talented, hardworking women who come to our home as helpers in Singapore-

When Charu shared with me her idea of this series on women photographers, I was excited, to say the least. Not just because this focus on strong women in their sphere of influence but it also was willing to bring to the forefront some hidden, undiscovered heroes. My last series was on ‘motherhood’, something which I hold extremely close to my heart – which, though, has not given identity to my existence but has added another beautiful, deep dimension to my life. Today, I write about another set of beautiful, talented, hardworking women, without whom a lot of our lives would be incomplete or not as easy. I write about the wonderful women who come to our home as helpers.

In the truest sense of the word, they are an extension to the family. In most of our homes, we trust them with our most priceless beings – our children, and there is no other trust which extends beyond this for a parent, that of one to let your child be handled by someone else for a few hours or days. It doesn’t stop just there, because these women come from far and wide leaving behind their own families and loved ones to take care of ours, just like it was their own. When I meet these women, they often have heartwarming or heartbreaking stories of their own to tell, but it often gets lost in their work. Some come from broken homes, some are a single parent working here to raise children behind at home, some are looking after aged parents behind, some are escaping their own difficult situations back… but what binds them here is not just the money but the feeling that they have found another home away from theirs.

As an expat, away from familiar territory and a first-time mother, I was extremely wary of letting my child away from me and be handled by someone else. I was on a sabbatical from work when I had my first child and chose to take care of him myself. I did have a helper assist me with everything else around the house but childcare. I was not in a rush to get back to work and therefore it worked perfectly for me. But what with so many of us who don’t have that option? I didn’t think too much of it, till I got another helper. My child was a little over 1 and we were expecting another one. It became imperative that I had someone in the house who I could trust my babies with and luckily we found one. Oh, The Joy! She struck a chord with my elder one from the first day and then there was no looking back and when you can trust these helps babies with another person, there is no other thing which you can’t.

I’ve come to deeply appreciate, value and love what these women bring into our families. They care for our needs and comforts, sometimes at the cost of theirs. They look after our children and homes like they are theirs. They give up on their weekends sometimes, to makes room for ours. They stay away from their family so that we can be with our comfortably. They share, love and give and all that they want is the same respect, love and care.

So this series is for those wonderful women, who make our lives easier and simpler and happier.
Thank You! You are the unsung heroes of a lot of our lives

Women Icons Network (www.womenicons.com) hosted a discussion around “Access to girls education is the key to achieving gender diversity”, on July 12, 2018, at the James Cook University Singapore, to mark the UN-designated “Malala Day”. It was intended to be a get together of like-minded individuals who care and value the need to enhance access to education for the girl child across all the underdeveloped & developing countries across the world.
The initiative was part of the Women Icons Network of  BERG Singapore.

Panellists included Dr Smita Singh (Senior Lecturer at JCU) who is an experienced educator and scholar. Leza Parker, an entrepreneur who is the CEO of the firm, SC Beauty Network Pte Ltd, that scaled across 17 countries globally. Shirley Ong is the Vice President at Mutual Benefits Realty Pte Ltd Singapore. Shirley is a Real Estate and Immigration specialist, who deals in high net worth individuals and companies portfolio. Dr Caroline Wong, who is a senior lecturer in business management and has published widely in the field of knowledge management by taking a multidisciplinary approach and this field of research extends into knowledge-based cities, creative cities, and creative industries with special focus on Singapore. Her research interest also extends to the scholarship of teaching and learning. Kashmira Mehta, who is the operations and marketing associate at BERG Singapore, moderated the panel discussion very well. She is also the convener of the Women Icons Network.

On July 12, 2013, Malala Yousafzai, a sixteen-year-old Pakistani girl engaged in the promotion of women’s education, delivered an impassioned speech at the United Nations (UN) headquarters on the need for gender equality in education. The address saw several rounds of standing ovations for the teenager and the day, July 12, was soon declared by the UN as Malala Day in honour of the young activist.

Interesting points surfaced while discussion regarding how gender diversity can be achieved across all countries.-

1. At the grassroots level, girls have to come over hurdles of infrastructure as schools are located quite far away from their houses. They also have to face the challenge of overcoming parental mindset of not sending daughters to school, as they can be a help to do household work and earn money for the family. On the other hand in some places, girls have to fight the mindset of getting the education only for the low-class job and not striving to excel further. Poverty is the other major reason, which deprives girl child of the education. Different countries have different challenges.

2. Mindset plays a big role in achieving gender diversity. Leza mentioned that in Singapore mindset is changing and to support women, men are participating fully in taking care of the family. She emphasized that if a woman really wants, she can thrive. Maybe few countries giving more opportunities few less but efforts are on everywhere and that’s the good news. Leza also emphasized that women are questioned can she lead, is she aware of business jargon. Therefore women should take advantage of social media and raise their voices in order to showcase their worth.

3. Shirley stressed on the fact that to accelerate career advancement strong communication line is the need. She mentioned that if women don’t speak for themselves then it is assumed that she is happy with the position where she is. Efforts should be made by women to aspire to reach high positions at the workplace. They have to communicate openly with their colleagues and bosses to get them heard. Otherwise, their efforts will be unnoticed and everybody will assume that they are happy wherever they are.

4. Dr Smita highlighted that the challenges for women both in the field of education and workforce needs context sensitive solutions. So the challenge is to bring government-led initiatives, gender-specific and friendly policies which can provide equal opportunities for all. She also mentioned that women as mothers should give equal opportunity to both kids and should never condition them to gender-specific roles or duties in life.

5. Dr Caroline mentioned that based on capability both men and women should have an equal chance. She also highlighted the need of change in parents thinking, who can play a very important role in guiding their girls for higher education in life.

In the end, everybody envisioned a beautiful future for womenfolk with a change of perception and mindset for women playing a major role at higher positions.

Promoting Excellence in Women!

Womenlines welcomes Anji Hallewell as an Influencer of Positive Mindset on the Womenlines panel. Anji is a Natural Strengths Coach, Trainer, and Founder of Hidden Lava.  In her sharing for this month, Anji is talking about the importance of choosing your vibe for excellence in life-

Life has its ups and downs. One minute things are great and you are loving life, and the next you find yourself in situations where you experience the complete opposite. Sure, to have both good and bad encounters is inevitable, but who controls how you respond in those situations? Is it led purely by external factors, like circumstances or other people? Or do you have control to the override button?

Physics has taught us that everything is energy and that energy vibrates. If something has a vibration, it has a frequency that can be tuned in and out. You have two types of energy going on. The first one you will be very familiar with, as this is how you get your psychical energy to function but the other isn’t something that is widely published. Do you know what it is? The lesser known of the two is your emotional energy. Where your focus and attention is, your emotions will go. Think that something is a good experience and you will feel joy and happiness; see something as unpleasant and you will evoke feeling such as, fear, doubt and worry. You see just like a car, the fuel you put inside it will have an impact on its performance. Think of emotions as your fuel, the car as your mind and you as the driver. The fuel affects your behaviour, your actions, your well-being and your state of mind. So, get to know what is fulling you at any point in time.

So, how can take control of this intangible energy? Think of it like a volume slider that you would see on the control panel in a recording studio. The lower end represents a lower volume and the upper end is the loudest volume. You all have your own internal slider which gets triggered subconsciously by situations or other people. But what if you were in control of it? What would life look like then? Wouldn’t you like to know how you can do that?

Taking this out of the recording studio and into your body, this slider represents your emotional energy, which is your fuel, aka your vibe or your frequency, as you go through life. It will have a spectrum that can fluctuate at different levels at any given time. At the lower end resides things like hate, envy, jealousy and comparison; and at the higher end, there is love, joy, creativity, courage and integrity. You can see already how the two opposites would manifest a very different outcome to situations. Quite simply where you are on this slider will determine what you experience in life. I guess it’s a little similar to the glass half empty or half full debate. What people have failed to miss is that the glass is refillable, but you can’t see that when you are operating from a lower level of vibration. You need to shift yourself to a higher level of vibration to see a wider view and connect to a higher level of thinking. In doing so, you are connecting to a different and higher level of emotional energy that drives and creates something greater.

So, my advice is this, learn more about yourself and your emotional energy, because it’s behind every decision you make and action you take. Start to master how you can control your slider, so you can rise above it and connect to a higher level of thinking. You will always have a choice in the direction that you go, it’s just whether you can elevate yourself high enough to see it.

In my 10 years of entrepreneurship journey, I have met amazing women doing incredible work in life. They are so talented, creative, and skilful that they can achieve a lot in life. One thing which I find missing in the majority of them was their attitude to take care of their own health. Women’s health in any family needs equal attention as for another member of the family.

We, as a woman, have all the reasons to mention that why we are not able to take care of ourselves. Many don’t feel like giving importance to themselves. Upbringing has taught that family comes first and rest afterwards. So with time, they are awakened about themselves only when some health challenge appears. Importance of doing exercise, mindful planning for healthy food for the full family including her, taking care of her mental physical and emotional health as she takes care of her family. This should be happening from the beginning. We should always remind ourselves that if we are fit and healthy physically and emotionally, we can take care of our family in a better way. With time everybody gets busy and when any challenge comes then only ifs and buts remain.

I want to request all males who are reading this article to make your girlfriend, mother, wife equally mindful of her own health as she takes care of you. As a family, all members have equal rights to live life beautifully. Here are my 3 tips for excellence in health which I have learnt from experts sharing, reading and listening to others experience-

  1. To improve your physical health yoga is a must in present times for every living being. Take out time over the weekend if you are working, squeeze in time during daytime if you are working from home or a homemaker, whatever it takes. You have no idea what wonders yoga can do in your life. Specially Pranayama.

  1. For your emotional health start journalling as the first activity in morning. Womenlines Day planner (free download on free subscription of online magazine www.womenlines.com) can be a great help to you. You can list out your affirmations, goals, to do list, list of the healthy diet for the day and anything for which you are full of gratitude. This activity if followed every day can help you to understand yourself in a better way.

  1. Inner health and stamina can be balanced through mindfulness of diet. It is all about telling yourself repeatedly, ‘Think Twice before Eating Anything’. The type of food, quantity, timing, mood, atmosphere, everything has some impact on you. Less quantity of healthy food intake at the right time, with a happy mood with all mindfulness for enjoying the taste, with thankfulness to God, can do wonders friends. Just think about it!  If you like these tips then please do share further with your network.

If you like these tips then please do share further with your network. Womenlines will love to hear from you too. If you want to share any tip please mention in the comment section below!
