Womenlines
takes pleasure to welcome Underneath the Pink Umbrella as a guest contributor on Womenlines panel. Underneath the Pink Umbrella is a student in Singapore and feels strongly about women issues. This month she is sharing her piece of writing on uncertainty-

Underneath the Pink Umbrella: The glass ceiling that we hope to shatter one day is only but the Edge of the revolutionary change that is needed to achieve gender equality. But I’ve always wondered, what is that metaphorical glass ceiling. Referring to it as the edge, I explore the definition of it, as the struggle between its definition in the Dictionary and all the metaphors one can associate with Edge.

To pull back

Or push through

Questions perpetuate

Us

Me

Who?

All of us taking

Gossamery steps to interrogate the unknown

Or the vault into the dark.

Define “edge” better

Because “the outside limit of an object, area or surface”

Forgets the metaphorical implication

And the placable meaning

Yearns for an unappeasable one.

Dictionaries dictate,

The authority that tempers and forgets.

The edge isn’t just a boundary-

It is the permeable membrane

That selectively absorbs

Yet selectively exiles

Underneath the Pink Umbrella:

Promoting excellence in women!

Pinkishe is the fastest growing self-help community of the Indian Women. It is a non-government Organisation focussed on the development, well-being, pride and happiness of the Indian Women. Pinkishe helps the women of India grow with pride and dignity by undertaking all causes that impact them. Be it providing financial aid to the needy girl child, fight against social injustice against women, providing them financial independence opportunities, working towards handling women security issues and providing them with a platform for them to interact, share, learn and seek help. It is pleasure to share about Shalini Gupta, the National Secretary General of Pinkishe in the ‘Entrepreneur of the Month’ section of Womenlines. In a short period of 15 months reaching out to 50 cities in India and building up the team there and getting 1.5 lacs women associated with Pinkishe is really commendable work. Read and listen to her incredible journey in her own words-

1. Please share with our reader’s little bit about yourself.

I am Shalini Gupta, National Secretary General of NGO Pinkishe in India. I am a graduate from Lady Irwin College, New Delhi. I have been associated with the field of education for last 15 years and have been training young kids Abacus and Vedic Math. I have been actively associated with social and community work for last 10 years and have been involved in educating underprivileged kids.

Apart from that, I am a happy and proud homemaker. My family is my priority. Raising my two sons into fine gentlemen is what I always wanted, and I am glad that I have not failed.

Over the last 15 months, Pinkishe has taken over almost everything else. I now spend almost all my time in Pinkishe. Pinkishe is a women organisation and doing wonderful work for women empowerment. Padbank is our one such initiative whereby we are creating awareness about menstrual hygiene among the underprivileged of the society. Pakhi is our other programme where we are creating a network of women lawyers all over India. If a woman is in distress she can call our helpline no.and can connect with our lawyers for free legal councilling. One of our prime objectives is to empower the women by making them financially independent and we are working towards this.

2. So when did you joined this venture and what inspired or motivated you to take a plunge into this venture?

Pinkishe is now 15 months old. It has risen fast. A few of us started it in May 2017. As I mentioned above, social work has been a major part of my life thus far. I have worked at the grassroots level – happy, content & thankful for having the opportunity to be impacting a few lives positively. Over the years, the urge to do something at a larger level increased. Something that can touch many more lives. On one side that thought was building up, on the other side I was getting more and more restless with the condition of women all over the world. Despite the visible positive change in a woman’s life, a very large population still has to struggle with a misogynistic society and its norms. Crimes against women do not appear to be subsiding. It might look or feel otherwise, but at least in a country like India, women’s participation in the workforce has dramatically declined.

To challenge that, we thought women must unite. They will need to come to a common platform and fight the ills themselves. And that paved the way for Pinkishe – an all women platform.

3. Can you share with us some of the challenges you faced during your initial days?

Honestly, we did not face many big challenges. Or rather if I look back, everything about Pinkishe has been a huge challenge but it’s just that we never took a challenge as a challenge. Everything looked like an opportunity.

Actually, the challenge that came our way was a different kind.

Pinkishe grew fast. Women associated fast and came forward to take on responsibilities. Society at large has been very supportive and appreciative. No institution whom we approached ever declined any reasonable support we requested. Setting up processes and handling the growth came as a challenge. Suddenly exploding into 50 branches across the length and breadth of the nation was challenging to handle as it demanded many more hours and many more hands daily than what we had anticipated. But all that extra work and pressure rather motivated us. The challenge has not vanished even today. But we have handled it well and we will continue to do so.

Another practical challenge that came our way, and it was pretty much on the expected lines was that many women who have happily been ‘homemakers’ all through, did not believe in their abilities. They suspected if they had in them what it takes to come out of their homes and start working towards women causes.

But the good part has been, that those fears vanished very soon, and the same women are now actively leading Pinkishe in their cities and doing very well. That, in fact, has been the most heartening aspect of Pinkishe.

4. So how do you balance your personal and professional life?

Well, Pinkishe has been demanding, very demanding! It has led to a complete change of my routine and timetable. I was very apprehensive initially about how my family will take it and cope with my new extremely busy schedule. But they have been most supportive…especially my husband. I think he could notice the content and pride on my exhausted face and has been very supportive. My elder son has just joined a job. The younger one is also quite independent. So I think I have chosen the right stage in my life for doing what I really wanted to do. On my part, I remain constantly aware of the fact that my family needs the same love, attention and involvement. So I ensure that their time does not get sacrificed. Sundays are strictly family and we make sure that we sneak in some vacation time mandatorily!

5. What would you suggest to other aspiring women who want to venture out in the social work field?

Many women don’t feel the need to work outside their homes. Their husbands earn well. But they lose their self-identities overtime. I believe it is essential for any human, and more so for a woman, to never let that happen. Identities are important. It’s important to have a feeling of happiness and pride. Social work I believe is a great medium. By utilizing your time and skills, one attains pride at many levels. You feel great to be helping in nation and society building. You sharpen your skills and feel better. I think every woman who can, should get involved in a little bit of social work and trust you me, you will love it!

6. Is there any person who has mentored/supported/inspired you?

My husband has been my greatest support. He has been that force who has always nudged me ahead. He has stood like a pillar and has never let me fall. I think every man can take a lesson from him. I believe that if a man stands by his lady and shows respects and support to her wishes, women have an amazing wealth of love to share. Families and the society will become a much better place.

7. Can you share some future plans for the venture you are part of?

We believe Pinkishe has just started. It’s in its inception stage. With the kind of vision it has, we have kept the first 5 years as just the stabilizing period. Lots will happen during this period too. We have so many things planned, it will need a lot of space. Rather than talking about that here at this stage, I would rather ask all to walk with Pinkishe. It is going to be an interesting and important journey.

How many dreams do you have? How many of those dreams have you fulfilled?

Most people have hundreds of dreams. But, the number of dreams they actually fulfil is just a minute fragment of that number. Do you want to be like most people or do you want to make positive changes in your life that will help you to unlock your real potential and materialize your possibilities?

Sindu Sreebhavan has justified the title of her book – ‘Infinite Possibilities’— with impeccable precision. It is a fantastic read which can do wonders for you. A well-researched, easy to read  book which will prompt you to take action and to witness your own success. In addition, it is a power packed book with easy to follow guidelines to train your mind to unleash your innate potential and to realise your success.

This book is divided into 3 sections:

In the first section, Sindu shares exclusive success stories about how ordinary people became extraordinary by conquering their challenges. In the second section, she explores the Infinite possibilities success manifestos, which are a set of 11 habits, attitudes and behaviours. This section provides the step by step process that will help you to unleash your inner potential. The third section of the book reasons the science behind the Infinite Possibilities and its application in the corporate and academic worlds.

Sindu has presented the stories in a form to get inspired by the courage, action and efforts of successful personalities. The section, Infinite possibilities Lens, at the end of each story, filter out the key learning, highlighting what factors helped the personality in the story to climb the success ladder.  You can also find specific Infinite Possibilities manifestos adopted by the personality from the story there. This helps in grasping the efforts and the key qualities these people had developed which can be replicated. Manifestoes will just open your mind in such a way that you will not stop yourself from using them in your daily activities. After reading this section you will certainly work on your goals, uncover strategies and devise a plan to reach those goals. And finally, the scientific explanation will just force you to change your mindset to a growth mindset.

My three takeaways are the three arguments Sindu shared that are essential to building your purpose and to take action-

1. You have more power to influence your mindset and your brain. Hence you can change your intelligence and talents more than you ever perceived.

2. Your mistakes and failures have a greater positive influence and value on your success than you ever reckoned.

3. No matter how young, old, experienced or inexperienced you are, you can take the path to success, irrespective of the opinion of others.

If you have dreams to fulfil, or if you want to help others to fulfil their dreams, Infinite Possibilities is a must read. This is a book for everyone – students, parents, executives and educators.

You are what you believe you are. In order to become what you want to be, get the guidance from this book, which will fill your life with Infinite possibilities!

So, here is my verdict on Infinite Possibilities – Read this book. You can get a copy of it here for yourself or as a gift to someone else.

Promoting Excellence in Women!

Womenlines Influencer for Yoga, Archana Amlapure is sharing an incredible secret to achieve goals in life-

How many times you set a goal and feel that you can never achieve it?
Do you set the goal and lose focus easily?
Most of us set the goals as a new year resolution, it can be as simple as getting up early every day or as big as setting up company. But statistics show that 92% of new year goals fail by Jan,15th.

Yes, setting Goal is one part and achieving the goal is another and important part of the Goal.
Many times, we want to achieve something, but we feel stuck, seized and stumbled.

I am going to share an open secret with you..The one mantra to achieve what you want in your life.
That is Meditation.
You need focus, consistency, determination and courage to achieve goals and meditation is the way to build all these qualities.

It is said that those who control their mind win and those who lose their mind are losers. Very often in the process of achieving a goal, we tend to lose our mind, but the key is to be patient and perseverant.

Modern research shows infinite possibilities and powers of mind and the brain. The power of the subconscious mind is more powerful than the power of the conscious mind. To construct a goal is the task of rational and conscious mind. While achieving the goal is the task of imaginative, intuitive mind, which is subconscious mind. Thus, the combined effort of the two will help to achieve a goal.
Very often we set goals like .. losing weight, getting up early, exercising regularly or even bigger life goal. But most of us can’t keep up with that, they lose focus, enthusiasm, became impatient or fall into the comfort zone.
In order to achieve goals, one needs strong will power, consistency, focus and this is basically the work of the right brain, which is intuitive and connected to the subconscious mind.
Our brain is divided into two parts ..right brain and the left brain. One is rational, which is left the brain and another one is intuitive, which is the right brain. Left part of the brain deals with analytical, rationalizing, logical skills. The right brain deals with the creative, imaginative and intuitive brain.

We use our left brain too much…thinking, analyzing, constructing, but we do not use the right brain much. . The right side of the brain is connected to the subconscious mind and developing this side helps in achieving goals.
Our education system also puts emphasis on developing our analytical and logical brain, but do not work on their imaginative and intuitive part. People who are successful often use their both parts of the brain.
We do not use even use 20% of our capabilities, now the study shows that we do not use even 1% of capabilities, that means how successful a person might be he never uses his capabilities fully.
To develop the capabilities, we need to develop and balance both sides of the brain and need to activate the right brain.
.
How meditation helps to activate the right brain-
Inactive, wake state, we have about 14 to 21 pulses per second, which is beta level.
In the dormant state, rest, relaxed state, pulse rate is 8 to 14 per second, which is alpha level.
In deep sleep- 4 to 8 per second, which is theta level.
The lower level is 0 to 4 delta level.

When we meditate, our breathing becomes slow, blood pressure drops, the parasympathetic nervous system becomes active. The number of thoughts gets reduced; all the energy will be concentrated on this. Our pulse rate drops and if we stay there for a long time, we remain in alpha level and right brain or your subconscious mind gets activated.
At this stage, if you set your intention or visualize the positive result of your goal, you are a step closer to achieving the goal.
Meditate, because some questions are not answered by google.
The answers /solution what you seek never come to you when the mind is busy, they come when the mind is still.
In addition, Meditation help to increase your focus, concentration, determination and builds up your willpower, helps in making you emotionally balanced, Which is the basic ingredients required for achieving Goals.

How can you do it?
1. Commit to just 2 minutes a day.
2. Select a time ..
3. Find a quiet spot. Sit comfortably.
4. Start with just 2 minutes.
5. Focus on your breath.

When you notice your mind wandering from the breath, just notice it and don’t berate yourself or try to push away the thought, but gently return to the breath.

Repeat this process as many times as you need to.

Some tips to keep it going-
1. If you are wondering if you are doing right or wrong. Don’t worry, keep it going. It is normal to feel uncertain, confused and lost. As long as you are doing it, you are fine.
2. If your mind keeps going through to do list or past, don’t stop or control thoughts. Keep it going, just notice them, acknowledge and slowly train yourself to stay longer. Everybody’s mind works the same way.
3. Don’t worry about the length of meditation. According to your comfort and convenience, start at 2 min and increase gradually up to 20 mins.
4. Be gentle. Don’t judge yourself. If you do judge yourself, don’t judge yourself for judging yourself. 🙂

Dreaming is Fun but achieving them is more fun if you have the right tool with you.

Once I was having a casual conversation with a friend, who is working in a mental health organization, about how they approach a patient with certain disorders. It was interesting to know that there were a lot of therapies along with the group and individual session, where patients were engaged in different activities to challenge themselves.

After an insightful evening with her, I felt can diet play a part in preventing or delaying the onset of mental disorders, and how food and its nutritive value can have a positive effect on health?

I noticed that majority of people associate food with weight loss, I mean less food is equivalent to weight loss and they don’t give much thought to the nutritive value of what they are putting into their bodies. Although in Indian homes we are used to hearing traditional home remedies using home spices commonly available in our kitchens by our great grandmothers to cure simple ailments like cold, cough and stomach ache but surprisingly nothing (that I have heard of) to prevent or cure mental illness.

But we surely know as a layman that what we eat affects how our immune system works, and how our body responds to stress. There is a definite connection between how food can affect our moods too, not only th taste but its appearance and texture can be de-stressing and stimulate to the senses.

On the other hand brain development or growth and inflammation too is directly or indirectly affected by the kind of food we eat . A balanced mood and feelings of well-being can be protected by ensuring that our diet provides adequate amounts of complex carbohydrates, essential fats, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and water.

Whole grain cereals, pulses, fruits and vegetables are more filling and because the sugar in these foods is absorbed more slowly and don’t cause mood swings. These foods are more nutritious as they contain thiamine (B1) a vitamin that has been associated with control of mood and folate and zinc, (shown to improve the mood of people with depression). Magnesium an important mineral helps cure insomnia (lack of adequate sleep associated with many other mental and physical disorders)

Since olden times we hear that breast milk is the best milk for infants and it is proven to be beneficial for a baby’s general wellbeing including mental health. Slowly when natural, healthy home cooked foods are introduced into the diet of a child it helps in brain development. Eating real food that nourishes becomes the protein-building blocks, enzymes, brain tissue, and neurotransmitters that transfer information and signals between various parts of the brain and body and hence helps in brain development.

Omega 3 and Omega 6 also have known to improve cognitive development. Certain foods may be the reason behind the actual mental disorders.

A nutritious brain diet follows the same logic as a heart-healthy regimen or weight control plan.  Sugary and high-fat processed foods should be limited, and we should  opt for plant foods like fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grains.

Recent results from a large trial in Europe show that such an eating plan may also help prevent, and not just treat, depression.
“A very large body of evidence now exists that suggests diet is as important to mental health as it is to physical health,” says Felice Jacka, president of the International Society for Nutritional Psychiatry Research.

A healthy diet is protective and an unhealthy diet is a risk factor for depression and anxiety.” Although experts caution that while diet can be part of a treatment plan, it shouldn’t be considered a substitute for medication and other treatments.

“Talk therapy and even the psychiatric medications can be helpful, but first, we have to approach the biochemical root cause.”
Integrative psychiatrists, on the other hand, might use these medications to stabilize a patient who is in a crisis state. Their overall goal, however, is to treat the underlying health issues through nutrition, supplementation, and lifestyle changes.
So as the saying goes “WE ARE WHAT WE EAT” we can actually make a real difference by slowly changing poor eating habits and making lifestyle changes. Nutrition and diet can be targeted as a preventive approach towards mental health.

Womenlines welcomes Anji Hallewell as an Influencer of Positive Mindset on the Womenlines panel. Anji is a Natural Strengths Coach, Trainer, and Founder of Hidden Lava.  In her sharing for this month, Anji is talking about how resistance can become your biggest opponent-

Last year, I hosted a talk where only 16% of those who registered attended (note to self: don’t hold a talk on a bank holiday Eve!). What this really highlights is the power of people’s RESISTANCE. You see all 100% of people started off in the same place; they had an intention to attend because something peaked their interest. Despite something resonating with them, a whopping 84% of those people decided not to come on the day. Perhaps they were tired after a hard day’s work, had another social offer that night or simply didn’t want to walk in the room alone. Whatever the individual reasons were, the truth here is that all 84% of those people allowed their resistance to win by listening to the excuses it created to stop them from growing.

Guardian of Your Parameters
Your resistance has learnt what your zone of comfort is and where the parameters are. This overprotective guardian sees its job as to keep you inside those walls. When you have ideas about stepping out, your resistance receives an alarm signal, to which it must defend.
Resistance is part of your identity, of which you have been perfecting since birth. You see your identity is made up of a few different components, some good and some not so good. You have strengths, negative traits and psychological resistance. We all have fear, worry, doubt within us, but how much does it lead your decisions?

When it Shows up
If you want to make a big change in your life, let’s say to switch careers, you will feel emotion rising that makes you rethink your original desire – that’s resistance. And resistance has a plethora of tactics up its sleeve which are designed to stop you in your tracks – fear, doubt, anxiety, procrastination. Resistance is defending the castle walls every single day, and until you become aware of it, you will never be the owner of your own destiny. Until you decide that you are going to consciously take control of your decisions, rather than your resistance calling the shots, it will dictate your life.

Beyond the Fictitious Wall
We’ve all experienced events in our lives that have instantly pushed us beyond the fear, doubt and worry. It’s as if we saw through it, enough to bypass its hold. So, what is that? What have we engaged with or shed to bring that shift in our thought process? Beyond the wall is a part of us that is full of knowledge, clarity and courage to progress in life. It’s the place where your natural strengths and talents also lie. But does it just have to be the big events in life for us to push past this and listen to what it is that we really want? Well, I hope not as that would just be tragic.
There is certainly another way to bypass the resistance, but first, you need to face it. Resistance is a strong force in which you can not fight or ignore. In martial arts, the first thing that happens in the Dojo is for both opponents to face one another, By looking each other in the eye, they are acknowledging that they see one another. This is what you must do with resistance. You must look it in the eye to let it know that you see it. When you truly acknowledge it, you can decide whether you want to keep giving it your energy. What you are actually doing here is deciding whether you believe the story that it has been telling you. That disengagement will be enough for you to use its strength to take it down and connect to your natural strengths.
