Womenlines takes pleasure to share about Ms Li-Anne Sia, Director of Two by Two Schoolhouse in the ‘Entrepreneur of the Month’ section of Womenlines. What is special at Two by Two Schoolhouse playgroup is that here children are exposed to the Mandarin language about 80 per cent of the time which is not happening at other Kindergartens. Li-Anne Sia came up with the idea of opening such schoolhouse when she saw her young kids not developing a liking for their mother tongue in their kindergarten. Then she decided to open up such kindergarten where kids can develop a liking for the Mandarin language from the beginning which can help them later in primary and secondary schools in Singapore. The journey to start this school had its own ups and downs. Listen and read Li-Anne Sia’s journey in her own words-

  1. Please share with our reader’s little bit about yourself.

I am a single mum with two children aged 11 and 14, we live together with our 2 rescue dogs Potato and Lola. I own and manage Two by Two Schoolhouse, a bilingual kindergarten with a Mandarin emphasis. I find great joy teaching 2 legged animals aged 3 – 99, and I earn extra keep by lecturing and writing for magazines and other publications. In my spare time, I enjoy extreme sports like trail racing.

2. So when did you started working in your field and what inspired or motivated you to take a plunge into this venture?

I have always been in the field of education; I taught biology and chemistry at secondary schools early in my career and wrote for educational publications. As we are a predominantly English speaking family, my children were resistant to the Mandarin language. When they were preschoolers, they came home from school lamenting that they hated the language. Being an educator myself, I decided to do something radical by creating a Mandarin-based kindergarten which made the learning of Mandarin fun for all children. The main medium of instruction is Mandarin, which is the opposite of typical preschools in Singapore that mainly teaches in English.

  1. Can you share with us some of the challenges you faced during your initial days?

It was difficult trying to get investors to buy into my idea as most people thought this concept of a Mandarin-based kindergarten would not take off. Even when we did find some investors, they did not fully believe in the idea and were very sceptical and critical whenever we tried to implement new ideas into the curriculum. In the end, we had to buy out our initial group of investors as they proved unsupportive of the implementation of many of our ideas.

  1. So how do you balance your personal and professional life?

I destress by running. It gives me an avenue to clear out my brain because pounding the asphalt is a mindless activity. I run whenever I’m stressed, tired, upset, angry; and I always feel better after that. I also try to travel as much as possible during the school holidays as I always believe in paying for experiences rather than material items. Sometimes I combine my love for running and travelling by participating in trail races overseas.

  1. What would you suggest to other aspiring women who want to venture out on their own?

Don’t do it! haha… there have been countless times when I wished that I never left my teaching position. At least then the hours were fixed and the pay was reasonably good. The first few years of starting the business, we did not take home any pay at all. In fact, we put almost all of our savings into the business as well. So it really made or break. So my advice would be, do it only if you believe with all your heart that your product or service will succeed. And then go and it with all that you’ve got.

  1. Is there any person who has mentored/supported/inspired you?

I count my business partner, Yiling as the one person who has been a constant in this journey.  She is calm and levels headed while I can be impulsive and easily excitable. As a result, she is the ultimate foil to my harebrained ideas or misplaced exuberance sometimes and is the perfect person to bounce ideas off of. We have gone through many ups and downs during this journey of running Two by Two and without her, I don’t think we would have come so far today.

  1. What do you have in the pipeline for your venture’s future development?

We are in the midst of digitizing our content so as to cater to the overseas market. A lot of our clients are expats who send their children to us to learn Mandarin. When they leave for their own countries, they always lament that their children would lose all that they have learnt and achieved with regards to the language and wish that they could continue their learning even while back home. That gave us the idea to digitize our lessons so that these children, and others as well, would be able to benefit from our curriculum.

Womenlines welcomes Anji Hallewell as an Influencer of Positive Mindset on the Womenlines panel. Anji is a Natural Strengths Coach, Trainer, and founder of Natural Genius Academy (formerly Hidden Lava). In her sharing for this month, Anji is sharing ultimate tips to how to utilise intuition to enhance success in life-

Listening to your intuition is the only way for a deeper sense of knowing. To get the true answers that we seek. We go through school learning all this knowledge and intellect to the highest degree, yet we still get stuck in jobs we don’t like, in relationships that have passed their expiry date and stuck in situations that diminish our soul. These are all sure signs that you are not listening to your intuition.

Why do we end up here? Because we don’t know what we really want, how to get it and believe that someone else must hold the answer! This is disempowerment at its highest, but it’s simply not true that you don’t know. You do know or rather your intuition knows. It’s not your soul that is depleting, it’s your ability to hear your own inner voice of wisdom.

It lays dormant underneath all the layers of conditioning that we go through on our way to adulthood. What we are told to do, or not to do, which forms our views on how life needs to be.  Like there’s only one right way! The more it becomes buried, the less awareness we have of it until eventually, we forget we even have it!

School is great at teaching children how to learn and acquire knowledge but isn’t known for teaching children how to stay connected to their true selves. The more we learn to rely on our intellect alone, the more disconnected we become to our true inner voice.  There is nothing wrong with the knowledge or being rational, but when we solely rely on it, we encounter problems. Although some schools are starting to acknowledge this and prepare their students by teaching them life skills, such as self-awareness.  Mindfulness programmes are being introduced for students to be aware of what is driving them, through observing their thoughts and feelings.

For those of us who were not taught such things at school, we must seek it ourselves as adults. So, can you tune back into it? Absolutely! This is something innate to us all and we can revive it from its dormancy. And there are a few things that you can do to re-find your intuitive side.

Firstly, become aware of your inner dialogue.  The voice in your head, that sounds like you is driven by different things. This was beautifully demonstrated by Disney Pixar’s Inside Out, with all the different emotions that could take over at any time.  If we are driven by fear, then we are likely to lash out, avoid or procrastinate. If we are driven by joy, we listen to our heart’s desire and our own sense of knowing.  And what drives your thoughts will have a direct impact on your outcomes. So, becoming aware of what is driving you is the key to knowing when to engage or disengage with them.  In other words, what is true and what is just rubbish. Mindfulness, meditation and spiritual yoga practice are all great ways to gain this internal awareness.

The second thing you can do is to become more curious! Children are great at this; they are pure creative little spirits who are into everything!  Over time this becomes less pronounced as life becomes less fun, with more serious matters to attend to.  We get stuck in a very repetitive way of existing which causes excitement and zest to take a back seat.  Monotony will kill intuition as it lacks any creativity.  So, start doing new and different things to wake up your intuition. Take a different route home, talk to some people you’ve never spoken to at work or take a spontaneous drive on the weekend and see where it takes you.

And finally, ground yourself.  When I spend time in nature, I shed any ego or invisible protective layer, and this allows the humbler side to emerge. It is in this humble state that our intuition will shine through.  For some people, this may be when they are drawing, dancing or climbing mountains. Whatever it is for you to spend time doing it because it will ground you and energise your intuition.

So, it takes some self-discovery to re-engage with it, as you need to master the ability to let go of what you think you know for your intuition to emerge. When you listen to your authentic expression of what your heart desires you start making more powerful decisions. It shifts the dialogue from “I don’t know” to “this is what I must do’, with certainty and truth. When you start to make more empowering choices in life it can only lead to natural success.

Really the secret to reviving intuition is to inject some lightness into your life.  When we’re not trying to control everything or having to know everything before we do something we can step into a different zone. One that frees us from all the striving and self-doubt, so we can start thriving. So, lighten up and let it emerge!

As an online media partner, Womenlines takes pleasure to share about upcoming webinar series by Leadership Demystified Webinars (founded by Puja Talesara Bhandari, strengthened by Sandeep Mukhi, Snehal R Singh, Dr Vanditaa Dar) centred around Communication Skills, with the Global renowned Facilitators. The first webinar by famous Executive Coach and Performance consultant Gautam Gouthi is scheduled for 17th May at 8:00 pm IST. In this incredible article, Gautam has shared about the importance of communicating with impact in life and what he is going to teach in the upcoming webinar-

Wouldn’t it be great if people came with a personal “how to communicate instruction manual”?

Think of any role, be it a leader, entrepreneur or a parent and you have the challenge of ensuring your diverse audience understands your communication every time. Enough and more has been written about listening, body language, verbal communication etc. but what often is missed out is the most crucial element of them all – the people differences.

Why is it that an in-depth message is appreciated by some people while others tune out and prefer it to be short and crisp? Why are that humour and informality works brilliantly with some people while others perceive it as a casual approach and expect you to be serious and formal while communicating? It leaves you wondering & frustrated why these people are making life and communication difficult for you and will you be ever able to get through to them?

Let me share one of the numerous examples I’ve come across in 18 years of my practice. A few years back one of the top global IT companies, was giving a presentation to a Fortune 500 client. Close to bagging the multi-million dollar deal they also had to meet the COO. In the meeting, the IT co. the team started the same presentation, by sharing who they are, what does their group stand for etc. The COO impatiently interrupted them and said, I know who you are and what does your group stand for, that’s why you are in my office. I had given you 7 minutes, you’ve exhausted 4, you have 3 more minutes to tell me how you plan to add value to us.

IT co. team froze, they didn’t know how to respond. They later told me, they thought this deal was history. One team member had sense enough to flash the last few slides on the screen. The COO looked at them and said that’s all I wanted to know.

What do you think really happened here? Was either of them at fault? Was the IT team not competent or was the COO being difficult? NO.

People are not difficult, they are different. People think differently, decide differently, deal with conflicting opinions and emotions differently and above all communicate differently. Once you understand these differences in people, you’ll understand how to communicate with them differently and build trust and achieve results.

Ask yourself, would the same communication style be effective with say Steve Jobs, known for communicating with high engagement and passion as against his handpicked successor Tim Cook – known for his measured and deliberate communication, OR with Jack Welch whose communication is short, crisp and result focused as against Richard Branson whose communication is people focussed added with warmth and a dash of humour.

What’s the cost we pay when we’re unable to understand and flex our communication style according to the listener: we often end up creating impressions which don’t reflect our true intent resulting in losing trust and creating latent and/or visible conflicts.

The question really is: HOW do we then communicate differently with different people?

To help you achieve that I share with you, our proprietary CAPS model, designed by my team and I. It categorizes the observable behaviours into 4 styles – Controlling, Analyzing, Persuading & Supporting.

Over the last 18 years, it has benefitted over 16000 people across geographies, from some of the largest corporates to individuals. The organizations’ and participants’ terrific success stories reflect that by practising the CAPS model they have been able to build trust & openness, minimize conflicts and achieve their communication objectives.

The CAPS model based on the 2 dimensions of Assertiveness and Expressiveness helps you:

  1. Identify your own preferred communication style
  2. Identify the other person’s preferred communication style
  3. Flex your communication style accordingly

Without understanding the behavioural differences and flexing, communication often hits an impasse resulting in objective being lost, trust is broken and stress going up.

This webinar will equip you with actionable tools to build trust, openness and help you achieve your communication results and objectives.

This webinar will make the communication preferences work for you not against you.

Welcome to ‘Success with Payal’ series at Womenlines!

Womenlines takes pleasure to introduce Payal Nanjiani, a US-based globally acclaimed inspirational speaker, leadership and success coach, as an Influencer for ‘Corporate Success Tips’ on Womenlines panel. Payal will be sharing exclusive content with Womenlines which can help women working in the corporate sector to develop leadership skills and success mindset. Payal will look forward to replying to queries from Womenlines readers too! Feel free to drop your questions in the comment section. This month read and listen from her about various strategies which can help women to get rid of fatigue and  work with full energy –

I feel fatigued at work on any given day. What are the ways to be full of energy so I can do my job well?

If it’s a workday, chances are you hardly have any ounce of energy left by quitting time. There are many reasons for this; too little sleep, too much stress, work pressure and the feeling that you just can’t get enough done. And for women, I add in the housework, family and social responsibility. These are enough to drain anyone’s energy. To bring your energy level up focus on managing the energy, not time management. Below are five super powerful ways to enhance your energy. For starters, make a list of things that often drain you or consume most of your time. Now that you have this list, apply the below five techniques and see the change in your productivity and results.

  1. Worry less. By nature, women tend to worry about everything. Whether it is about children, spouse, food, family, friends, or office work. There is a difference between being concerned and worrying. While the former takes you more towards solutions, the latter is detrimental to your health and progress. Say to yourself, “Stop. This is a quick way to distract the mind and avoid building up waste thoughts that lead to worry. It will immediately break the worry chain and give you time to think more strategically.
  1. Stop Overthinking: Women have a tendency to overthink more than their male counterparts. Overthinking means you think more of what will happen wrong and this lets in fear which in turn reduces your capacity of thinking right. To overcome this habit of overthinking, don’t think of what can go wrong, but what can go right.
  2. Avoid being a perfectionist: Top of the class, faultless on the job, and award-winning partners, wives and mothers. Many women are worried about how they perform. Why do we want the ‘wonder women’ label on us? why is it so difficult to accept the fact that sometimes we underperform? One of the reasons is a lack of self-esteem. The first step here is to begin to fully appreciate your own worth.
  3. Stop saying YES to everyone: Your time is valuable and so is your energy. By saying yes, when you really wish you could just say no, you are giving your time and energy away. It’s really time that you make your peace with disappointing people. It simply comes down to one simple question: Are you going to chose you or them?
  4. Self Sabotaging: Women aren’t always aware of their own self-sabotage, or the damage it is causing, because the effects of their behaviour may not show up for some time. Self-sabotage is any action that gets in the way of your intent. Start identifying the root cause of your self sabotaging and self- reflect on the cause. It takes serious self-reflection to understand why you keep shooting yourself in the foot in the first place.

Energy can be replenished, but we need to invest in recovery so that we actually accumulate some more of it. Apply these five super-powerful techniques to conserve your energy and increase your focus.

Are you searching for fitness tips for women who have no time?

Exercise sounds excellent, but when it becomes to have to do it, that’s another tale. Because most of the time, if you’re busy, you can’t do it. It’s also cold or hot to run outside, as well as airy to run out, or you can’t manage a gym membership. While being busy makes it difficult to fit in a daily workout routine, there are plenty of exercises you can do at home. If you are finding the best hacks, then you are in the right place.

Here are 12 simple fitness hacks for women who have no time:

Do Some Bed Pushups

An exercise where you don’t need to leave your comforter. Cardiello suggests beginning your day by using your bed to do some bed pushups, and you require one minute.

Wall Surface Pushups

There are surely many empty walls that can be used for some extra activity; so try a wall pushup. It will not only make you sweat, but it will also help to trigger muscles in your chest as well as the back that can assist in increasing calorie burn. Start with ten repeatings. This exercise also helps to lose weight quickly by burning calories and building muscle.

The Plank

This is just one of the most significant exercises to strengthen the core area of the abdominals, obliques and back muscles, maintaining tighten up and tone your waist also.

Method

Begin in the press-up position, on your elbows, instead of your hands. Raise your body over the floor, so your elbows and feet are holding your whole body, and also try to make your core as straight as probable.

Be sure your elbows are under your shoulders and also hold for as long as probable. Every single time you do the plank, try and also hit your previous time.

Involve Your Muscles

Strength training is vital to any type of exercise routine, but Cardiello says it’s even extra critical if you’re just giving a couple of mins a day to exercise since it helps arouse your metabolic rate. Try executing three sets of standard squats for 25 reps at some point in your day.

Box Steps

This can get your heart speed up if done at an excellent speed, and also benefits leg strength and overall control. It will genuinely serve the quadriceps muscles at the front of your legs, also the glutes.

Method

Stand in front of a strong box or stairs and start stepping on and off at a safe speed. Exchanging your first leg, so both legs get an equivalent amount of effort. You can additionally hold weights in any hand.

Squats While Commercials

We pass a lot of time watching tv as well as sitting on the sofa, so why not obtain some exercise while doing this ideal exercise? Try ten regular squats or sofa squats (sit on the side of the couch and stand, pressing your glutes per time).

Do A Couple Of Stretches

Because of holiday trip and dressing up for holiday celebrations, legs are muscles usually tight, Cardiello stated. By stretching, you’ll not just increase flexibility; however, it will surely also build strength.

Method

On your back, stretch your right leg and up till you really feel a stretch. Hold your left leg bent to secure your back as well as stop your hips from misaligning. Keep the stretch for 15 to 30 secs, then change legs.

Lunge

Lunges are a superb movement to strengthen and improve leg muscles-quads, hamstrings, calf bones and also glutes-along with the abs and the lower back, which are used for strength.

Method

Begin with your feet of shoulder-width aside, take a big step and put most of your weight on your level front foot as you reduce your hips to the ground, with your back heel raised and your back straight.

Fall downward until your knee is near but not really touching the floor. Currently, press back to the start position with your front foot, and repeat the movement with your other leg.

Park Bench Dips

Are you walking in the park? Stop and also try some tricep dips. You can further use the corner of your desk or a table to perform the same thing.

Method

Begin with ten repeatings and also use both the seat part of the bench or the back of the bench that’s a little greater for an alteration.

Make Use Of A Basket When Getting Your Groceries

Take a basket rather than a pushcart at the store and burn extra calories in 30-minutes, Cardiello recommended. Simply change arms to confirm that you’re managing both sides equally.

Walk At Lunch

Before going for lunch, looking at your computer screen show for still an extra 30 minutes, choose a walk outside. Research recommends that 30-minute walk can help to increase performance.

Drink More Water

Make it a routine to always bring a bottle of water wherever you go. Hydration is vital for not only weight control, but more for keeping you hydrated. The majority of people need to aim for 64 oz water daily.

In this article let’s find out some information about osteoporosis which is very common with advancing age especially in women after menopause.

Osteoporosis is thinning of the bones, with a reduction in bone mass, due to depletion of calcium and bone protein. During the normal process of bone remodelling,i.e. to maintain a healthy skeleton, older layers of bone are replaced with newer layers.

Bone loss occurs when this balance is altered, resulting in greater bone removal than replacement. With the onset of menopause, the rate of bone remodelling increases and magnifying the impact of the remodelling imbalance. The loss of bone tissue leads to disordered skeletal architecture and an increase in the risk of fracture.

A woman’s risk of breaking a hip due to osteoporosis is equal to her risk of breast, ovarian and uterine cancer combined.

The common risk factor for the disease are:

It is advisable to go for Bone mineral density tests if you are at menopause age or crossing above 50 years of age and/or have any risk factors. Almost 80% of bone density is determined by heredity and 20% by lifestyle.

Bone mineral density tests (BMD) shows how dense bones are and hence determine whether you have chances of developing osteoporosis.

One of the best ways to avoid osteoporosis is to choose the right form of exercise. Some form of exercises you can choose are listed below-

I will be coming up with few exercises for the prevention of osteoporosis in the next segment. If you have any query do write in comment box.

Want to get rid of a cold, cough, fever, headache or nausea without medicine? Follow the five simple home remedies in this video. Society conditions us to think that these illnesses are something bad, something unpleasant, but according to Naturopathy and Ayurveda, it’s quite the opposite. Colds, fevers, vomiting, diarrhoea – these illnesses come to detoxify and clean our body. They are Mother Nature’s attempt to get rid of the waste, the toxins accumulating in our body over the past few months. For example, cold is toxins releasing through the nose. Fever is toxins releasing through your sweat. Vomiting is toxins releasing through your mouth. Instead of suppressing them inside by medicine, we should let them run their course. However, we can fasten up the detoxification process through fasting, enema, wet pack, sunbathing and pranayama.

These easy home remedies will help you get rid of cold, cough, fever, headache and other acute illnesses fast and naturally, without any medicines!
