Fit Tuber

Wikipedia describes dietary supplements as-

dietary supplement is a manufactured product intended to supplement one’s diet by taking a pillcapsuletablet, powder, or liquid.] A supplement can provide nutrients either extracted from food sources or that are synthetic in order to increase the quantity of their consumption. The class of nutrient compounds includes vitamins, minerals, fibre, fatty acids, and amino acids. Dietary supplements can also contain substances that have not been confirmed as being essential to life but are marketed as having a beneficial biological effect, such as plant pigments or polyphenols.

It is all about health excellence. Any person who wants to lead a healthy life will definitely work upon the sources from where he is going to consume the required nutrients for optimal health. Now here comes the personal choice of either going for natural food or to buy supplements. It is quite obvious that the choice of taking natural food instead of buying all the supplements can be the best choice for wholesome health. What matters how much aware you are about the right food source for the right nutrient.

Influencer for Alternate Therapies Suzanne Alfandri has shared how to use EFT tapping to align your thoughts with your desires!

Womenlines takes pleasure to share powerful knowledge about EFT Tapping from the expert Suzanne Alfandri, from the USA.

Does that quiet voice that is chattering in your mind, support the changes you want? Noticing what your self-talk is, can be a big step to making that change you want!

What is Tapping?

(Credit)

Tapping, also known as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), is a powerful stress relief technique. Tapping is based on the combined principles of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology.

Studies have shown that Tapping decreases cortisol (often called the stress hormone) in your body. The World Health Organization has announced that stress is the health epidemic of the 21st century.

This is because stress is linked to anxiety, weight gain, sleep problems, lack of motivation, chronic pain, stomach issues, and depression. Tapping is proven to reduce stress, lower cortisol, improve sleep, reduce anxiety, relieve pain, increase productivity, and so much more!

Stress is also detrimental to your immune system because when you’re stressed, your immune system’s ability to fight off antigens is reduced, and you are more susceptible to infections. Tapping helps to lower stress, and in turn, allows your immune system to do its work!

How does it work?

Credit

The basic Tapping technique requires you to focus on a negative emotion at hand. This can be a fear, a worry, or any unresolved problem. While maintaining your mental focus on this issue, you use your fingertips to tap 5-7 times on 9 specific meridian points of the body (more specific information on this below).

Tapping on meridian points sends a calming signal to the brain, letting your brain know it’s safe to relax. So, for example, when you receive bad news from your boss or you begin to worry about future events, it triggers a part of your brain called the amygdala.

When you think of the amygdala, one word should come to mind:

Fear.

This part of the brain is responsible for triggering the stress response in our bodies, releasing stress-related hormones into the bloodstream. Also popularly known as the fight-or-flight response, it is the body’s natural reaction to a perceived threat.

The problem is, we tend to have our amygdala in charge way more often than we want.

The amygdala’s response is effective when you’re faced with real-life danger but damaging when you want to feel calm and confident during a high-stakes meeting. And most of the time when this is happening in your body, you aren’t experiencing the fight-or-flight (or freeze) response for the same reason that our ancestors did long ago were. There is no tiger in the woods, but the response in your body is still the same.

Tapping on these meridian points (the same used in acupressure) while you think about what is causing you stress helps your mind understand that you are not in any physical danger and it is safe to relax, reducing cortisol levels.

Tapping gives you the opportunity to bring your life back into balance and reduce stress around your relationships, finances, weight, pain, fears, and so much more.

You got your new house, you settled down the whole house as per your dreams and now you want to know a new neighbourhood having faith in the saying that –

A good neighbour-a found treasure!

Chinese proverb

Moving into a new neighbourhood is certainly full of excitement as it gives you the wonderful chance to become part of a new circle. As a newcomer in a new community, the first impressions you will carry out will determine the quality of your relationship with your new neighbours. Now the question comes how to know your new neighbourhood?

Let’s go through certain creative ways to get to know a new neighbourhood-

1. Be innovative while introducing yourself

It’s a great idea to take the first step as a newcomer in your neighbourhood as it can put your neighbours’ at ease. The fact that you are on the same street and the same locality is enough to initiate any conversation with the neighbours around. As you are a newcomer in the community be kind while introducing yourself to the neighbourhood. You can bring a gift to break the ice while introducing yourself. You can carry flowers or potted plants as a gift. Just be mindful not to carry any alcohol or food as these choices vary from person to person.

2. Seek advice from neighbours

As the whole neighbourhood is new to you, so you have to collect basic information related to it. Immediate neighbours are the best people to seek advice from. You can enquire about, the best schools, restaurants to try around, or which gyms are giving the best service. Once your neighbours will see how eager you are to know about your neighbourhood they will certainly be at ease and will love to share the information with you.

 3. Invite your neighbours for a house warming party

Arranging a housewarming party is the best way to make your neighbours at ease and understand them in a much better way. Plan out games, music, good food and engage with your neighbours best way, so you can use this opportunity to understand them better. Once that comfort level comes in communication then you can seek more information from them in understanding the neighbourhood better way.

4. Google about the place

Google is the best place to seek more information about your new neighbourhood. Incidents happening around the place, reviews by the residents around, what type of houses are there around the neighbourhood, shopping centres, schools etc. So much information you can take out by just searching on the internet. For eg you want to know about the houses on sale in the Vancouver area, you just have to type ‘Vancouver homes for sale’, or if you want to know the good school in Vancouver, you just have to write ‘Top schools in Vancouver’.

 5. Check the city events calendar

One of the best ways to know about any new neighbourhood is to engage in community events. Once you start engaging in the local events you are going to have much more interaction with people around and this can help you in better understanding your neighbourhood. While checking out the city events calendar you can take a note of fairs, festival celebrations, kid’s activities, the city’s chamber of commerce calendar, any parade planned for the year etc.

Getting to know your neighbours comes with a wide range of benefits, including more safety as you can have a pair of extra eyes watching your house, involvement in community events, more socialising, making new friends, Whether you need to borrow a screwdriver or want to share a cup of coffee, a good neighbour is always there to help. Whether it is joyous time or not so good times, these neighbourly bonds become special for you with time. Always remember we all are humans and are alike, therefore if you see a neighbour around, just a simple smile can be a good way to start with!

Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome a woman of substance, an entrepreneur Dr. Sulochana Segera, who is putting her heart and soul to make women self-reliant through her venture, Institute of Women in Management from Sri Lanka!

Woman of Substance Dr. Sulochana Segera

In the arena of the MSME and SME sector, Dr Sulochana Segera is considered a mentor, counsellor and investor of goodwill, as she most often becomes the one to travel to rural areas and discovers what she calls “diamonds in the rough”. Her efforts have encouraged boards to follow a more inclusive leadership in their top tier management structures.
A certified Personality Development Trainer in Asia, Dr Segera is a trainer for the World Bank entity IFC on the area ‘Sustainable Private Sector Investment’ whilst in the private sector for the top Global multinational- Coca Cola the official trainer for the brand ‘5 by 20’ which is an initiative for the development of 5 million women by way of empowerment and Economic Development. She is also a trainer for British Council ‘Active Citizen’ project.
She is the Patron of the T.E.A Project, (UK Based Project in Sri Lanka empowering Children) and she also sits in the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Skill Development, Employment and Labour Relations.

Giving up on a promising career with a multinational company, Dr Sulochana Segera embarked on her own and launched a consultancy firm, which turned out to be a successful operation. Despite the success, the space seemed to be too visible. Her clients turned out to be all male and they were successful professionals occupying the top slots in the corporate world.

Furthermore, having worked as a Head Hunter for senior management, it dawned on her that corporates in general were biased in their process of hiring, which was highly skewed towards men and least in favour of hiring young women or married women with young children. Her training programs were well-attended, but by men. Women had the privilege of participating only if the company had decided to sponsor them. Women were haemorrhaging from the workplace with very little in place to support their professional journey. Witnessing the real-life scenario unfold in her work, Sulochana turned to researching on women and their status and role in the Sri Lankan context. Her endeavour was initiated when the country had just recovered from a 30 year bloody civil war. Women’s empowerment became a common metaphor during this time, which prompted Sulochana to try to understand the meaning underlying the expression that was so commonly used among civil society organisations. Sri Lanka’s response to empowering women, as witnessed by Sulochana was not fitting in her eyes and in line with her expectations. Her effort to gather additional information from women’s organisations that professed to advocate women’s empowerment was even more frustrating given the lacuna in doing justice to the slogan. Initiating her own mission to bring about women’s empowerment, Sulochana embarked on establishing her own network with Singapore and Malaysia in order to study their best practices in women’s empowerment.

She returned to Sri Lanka with a great deal of information and ideas and had by then framed her own thoughts on the course she would take in ensuring empowerment among women. She set the groundwork for an organisation for women; an organisation that would be mentoring women and building networks among organisations to benefit women in careers and businesses. Together with Nilam Samsudeen, she came up with the idea of registering Women in Management as a private institute and not as an externally financed Non-Governmental Organisation. This was indeed a very difficult and challenging decision that was accomplished, given the fact that most women’s organisations were totally dependent on local or international funding. Sulochana believed that self-reliance was the key to empowerment and thus, WIM was launched as a membership driven organisation in 2010. It had only two members. Today, WIM has 2160 members worldwide and is open to all nationalities.

The mentoring program implemented by WIM began by enlisting WIM members who were in top positions in their respective fields of work to mentor women in middle management to be successful in their careers. Not stopping at that, WIM began a journey to the heart of the country, namely the rural areas where no organisation had ever been to. Through its work, WIM ensured that empowerment was not merely relegated to a grand term in gender studies, but put to practice. And today more than 10,000 women from all over the country are connected with WIM.

What is unique about WIM and its programs, which started as a grouping for women, is that they are open to men as well. Yet, WIM continues to stay true to its objective of ensuring that Sri Lankan women will be equipped to step into national and international markets and workplaces as professionals and skilled employees.

How Diversity and inclusion can be used to break down barriers for those with invisible disabilities!

Our guest contributor Linda Fisk has shared an insightful article on how to use diversity and inclusion to remove such barriers and make a better workplace. Certain unconscious biases, which are the underlying attitudes and stereotypes that people unconsciously attribute to other people, can be a barrier to the growth of those with invisible disabilities. Linda is a multi-award-winning leader, keynote speaker, podcast host, author and university professor dedicated to amplifying and extending the success of other high-calibre business leaders.

Today, one of the single best indicators of an exceptional work environment is a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.  When it’s clear that an employer values every individual’s contribution and all employees are provided with every chance to succeed, you’ll find a more engaged, committed, loyal and high-performing workforce.  When an employer focuses on individual abilities and rewards exceptional performance, the employees have the assurance of fairness and equity that diversity and inclusion initiatives were always meant to inspire.

And, while definitions of diversity in the workplace have now expanded to include less visible characteristics like religious beliefs, sexual orientation and even parental status, it’s important to highlight that about 1 in 10 people lives with an invisible disability.  And, many times, those invisible disabilities can impair the ability to work under normal conditions or participate in social activities at work.  People with invisible disabilities can have dramatic limitations on typical work activities – and can be difficult for co-workers to acknowledge, recognize and understand the disability.

Of course, it is the right of the individual to disclose their disability or not to their employer.  Due to the social stigma directed at people with disabilities, within the workplace and outside of the workplace, some employees with an invisible disability choose not to disclose their diagnosis.  In fact, a recent study found that 88% of people with an invisible disability had negative views of disclosing their disability to employers, of a fear of being labelled.

Invisible disabilities can range from epilepsy to dyslexia, and hearing and vision impairment to chronic pain, PTSD to autoimmune compromised and diabetes, and mobility impairments to anxiety and depression.  In the United States, 96% of people with chronic medical conditions show no outward signs of their illness.  About a quarter of those with some sort of chronic medical condition has activity limitations, ranging from mild to severe. In the time of COVID, the incidence of invisible disabilities are certain to grow as people confront an increasing number of physical and mental health issues.

It is important to note that if a person has a disability, that does not mean they are disabled. Many living with invisible disabilities are still fully active in their work, families, sports or hobbies. Some with disabilities can work full or part-time but may struggle to get through their day. Others may need assistance and may have difficulty with daily activities which would make it difficult to maintain gainful or substantial employment due to their disability.

Everyone with a disability is unique, with varying challenges and needs, as well as abilities, qualities and characteristics. But, a lack of sensitivity to another’s disability, especially an invisible disability, can create misunderstandings, resentments and frustration, worsening the situation.  Co-workers may consider someone with an invisible disability to be lazy, weak, antisocial, incompetent, aloof or distant.

Those suffering from invisible disabilities should be offered the same considerations and protections as all other disabilities – and no person should be discriminated against because of disability, whether it is hidden or visible.  As leading employers recommit to nurturing a diverse and inclusive workplace, invisible disabilities should be identified, discussed and considered.  When an employer focuses on individual abilities and provides a safe and inclusive environment for everyone, teams flourish, employee loyalty soars and performance skyrockets.

Smart leaders will take hidden disabilities into consideration, re-configure diversity and inclusion programs to meet the needs of all, and become sensitive to the growing population suffering from invisible disabilities. Many of those who have seemingly recovered from Covid-19 are expected to faced chronic health problems for the rest of their lives. Savvy leaders will re-think their diversity and inclusion programs to include invisible disabilities, giving those suffering appropriate accommodations and a safe place to disclose their unique disability.

Your commitment to diversity and inclusion can provides a sustainable competitive advantage for your company – motivating every kind of talent in your business.  Now more than ever, it defines the kind of corporate America that we want to shape and cultivate in the next century.

?‘Sparking Joy with Marie Kondo’ is a transformational Netflix Show which shares about organisational guru, Marie Kondo,as she helps people use her famous KonMari method to get harmony in their personal and professional lives. In this series Marie has also shared glimpses from her personal life too , thus the viewers got to see her way of living, meet her family, and how she sparks joy in her life through tidying habits she follows. In her series Marie applies the fundamentals of her famous KonMari Method™ to businesses, relationships and communities brilliantly. The impacts of tidying, as shown in the series are amazingly surprising, sentimental and transformational in the lives of the people Marie meets.

Tidying is a festival!

Marie Kondo

Marie Kondo is famous for running an immensely successful home organizing business that she started when she was just 19 years old. Her New York Times bestseller book, explaining her tidying principles, has sold more than 8 million copies in 40 languages. In a very short time, Kondo has become phenomenon and a household name across the globe.

Most impressive idea shared by Marie is that tidying up can affect a person’s relationships with others and their work as well. The basic concept for both the series is that people must find space for just those things in their life that spark joy. She beautifully connects the process of tidying up to the emotional and spiritual aspects of people’s lives.

According to KonMari method you should never think twice, deciding which items truly serve a purpose in your life and which you can do without. This is something Kondo coined as “sparking joy” in your heart. To decide if something sparks joy, put your desk items all in one pile on the floor, and then go through each item one by one. If you feel the spark, great, but if you don’t feel the spark, express your gratitude to the item for being part of your life before moving it out.

The first episode it is shown that. Logan’s Garden is a plant nursery in Los Angeles run by Jimmy, who has been gardening since he was four and his 35-year-old son, Logan, who has been gardening since he was 16 Jimmy is still reluctant to pass the business in his son’s hands There is a mental gap between Jimmy and his son. Marie comes in the scene and starts applying her famous KonMari Method™,going by category (seeds, tools, stationery and so on), anything that doesn’t “spark joy” must be thanked for its service . While the whole tidying up process is running, in between father and son are joined by their daughter/sister Porter, who start to bond over their hopes for the business. The result is a beautiful makeover of the whole nursary leaving the family with better bonding and connection with each other. The following two stories are also very impactful portraying how powerful can be act of tidying up can be getting a fresh start in both personal and professional level!

Ideas which impacted me a lot while watching this series-

1) Idea of expressing joy for clothes while folding, giving love to clothes, expressing gratitude for things while donating.

2) Having sentimental box in the house and storing all the items, cards, gifts given by family members which spark joy in your life.

3) Setting up a power corner with a chair and table in any room with candles, flowers and other items which can refresh you anytime.

4) Idea of dividing the family task list as a couple as per each others strength.

5) Expressing gratitude and joy while folding clothes and letting go things which are not in use.
