Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome Lynn McIntosh, as a guest contributor at Womenlines. Lynn has shared a very interesting article on an understanding of a Narcissist’s attitude-

Let’s take an inventory regarding the attitude that a narcissist has towards you.

Do you ever get the idea that the narcissist in your life is unimpressed by you?  That this individual has low regard or low level of respect for you. Do you ever get the sense that they are really dismissive towards you and all the many ways you like to think and do?  Do you ever think that person has a condescending attitude towards you or is using you?

The above happens almost every time you are in the narcissist’s presence because that is how they think.  There is one simple phrase that summarizes the narcissist’s attitude towards you and it’s “you’re not me.”  They think that is a good way for them to think.

The narcissist has their set of standards and you just don’t meet up to them.  There is that sense of haughtiness and it reflects their need to be in control over you because they have such an inflated understanding of who they are.  There are implications spilling over from that statement “you’re not me.”  It’s also their way of implying you don’t think like me (and you should) or you don’t prioritize like me, you don’t have the same skills like me, you don’t have the same connections as I do, you don’t have the right beliefs like I do.
They have this need to build themselves up by saying “you’re not me” that gives them the opportunity to think “well if you look at me, you are going to see what an enlightened person looks like.”  When they say “you’re not me” it implies insults.  Insults such as you’re defective, you’re inadequate,  you’re inferior, you’re unenlightened and furthermore you’re a nuisance too.  You’re confused and you’re probably wrong.  You have baggage, you can’t be trusted, you’re emotionally imbalanced.

When they think “you’re not me” you’re thinking “what did I do to deserve this?”  “Why do you think so poorly of me?”  There is one simple answer to that and its “you showed up.”  When you are in the narcissists’ presence and after a while when they realize you’re not going to fit into that mould that they have for you, here comes that notion “you’re not me” and all of the insults that go along with it.
I have clients coming to me saying “I’m never going to be able to please this person.”  This individual is constantly in a bad mood.  What does that statement “you’re not me” tell us about what is going on in the interior of the narcissistic person?

  •  Narcissists are highly self-impressed.  Part of the defining feature of narcissism is that they have an inflated view of who they are to the extent that their egos are much larger than is really necessary and frankly their ego is so large, there is not much left in the equation for you.  They have to have that superior position, so they view the world in such a way that allows them to maintain that bias.  Narcissists are empty souls.  This implication that “you’re not me” and you’re defective, I’m better than you – all this is part of their grand design to maintain a false self.  Way back in their younger years and throughout their adult years and interactions, they’ve realized there are people that may not like them, people that have differences and they’re going to ask for some adjustment and the narcissist is thinking “Well, that means you’re rejecting me” and they put all sorts of interpretations on differences that are actually false so what they do is they build a persona around the notion that says “I’m impenetrable.”  There is nothing wrong with me, there is nothing that needs to be changed.

  • Narcissists will almost always, sometimes subconsciously, assign the role of “loser”  to you.  As I mentioned, all you have to do is show up, and you are already in second place and sinking fast.  They think “because I’m superior you have to be inferior.”  That’s the way they think.

  •   Narcissists truly don’t understand the commonalities that all people have.  When a narcissist thinks “you’re not me” it’s their way of saying “I’m truly unique.  The truth is we all have unique skills, ingredients and traits.  That’s part of what’s built into human nature.  Diversity and variety. But then we have a whole lot of commonality as well and they don’t like to acknowledge that. We all have insecurities, we all have moments for anger, we all have the potential for good, we all make blunders, we each have likes and dislikes, we are all the same in many kinds of ways. Narcissists don’t like to say, yes, you are my fellow companion on this road of life and we are all in this together.”  The narcissist says “No, I’m apart.”  They can’t understand our commonality and interconnection.  To them, that’s almost something that brings them down into a lower place.

  • Narcissists are users.  When they are saying “you’re not me” the implication is “I wish I could turn you into a mini-me so that you can make me feel better and do all sorts of things that are going to give me pleasure.”  Narcissists have questions in their minds,  “What have you done for  me lately and what are you going to do for me next?”  They are users, exploiters in search for narcissistic supply.  “You’re not me” implies              you’re not giving me the supply and complying with my regulation

  •  They cannot or will not see your positive traits.  When a narcissist is thinking “you’re not me” they overlook the fact that you’ve got some good      characteristics.”  “Why don’t I slow down and appreciate that.”  In fact, when they see what you consider to be your positive characteristics they       say “Its fake.”  If you show some positive characteristics they say “oh, you’re just manipulating” (which is their projection).  If you show your positive characteristics, it’s like “unimpressed” because you’re not me.
It is exasperating.  When you are around these individuals, that theme permeates so much of their interaction style.

  • So what is going to be your response when the narcissist says “you’re not me.”  The first response is “That’s correct.”  “I’m not you and I gladly embrace it.”  Your rejection doesn’t threaten me.  In fact, your rejection stimulates me to become a better person.  Knowing that you’re not like me, and you knowing you are going to find that a big huge blight against me, my response as I continue will be I’ll cease hiding my real self.  I’m going to cease appeasing and justifying who I am.  I’m going to cease arguing.  What’s the point?  I’m going to cease worrying or fretting what you’re attitude might be next.  I’m going to cease changing my good plans just to get along with you, when in fact, you are never going to be pleased anyway.  I’m also going to cease wondering if you’re going to be in a good mood today. So the next time you realize you’re in a situation and you realize that the narcissist is over there thinking “you’re not me”, there is one ultimate response I’m going to have towards that and that is “thanks for the compliment

Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome Prof K. K. Varma, author of ‘Life and Times of Unborn Kamla’, which is an intriguing book addressing issues of diminishing girls due to female feticide and infanticide in India. The book is certainly a must-read as it can make people introspect to find some solution and attract the attention of right authorities and associations who can put collective efforts to solve this problem. Please visit the links mentioned below to place your order for the book. In the interview read and listen to Prof Varma why he was so much moved to write a book on such a crucial topic-

Beginning his career with a teaching stint at IIT Kharagpur, Professor K. K. Varma has spent long years in social sectors. His professional expertise relates to Social and Policy research; Gender Issues and women’s empowerment, Reproductive & Sexual Health; Project development and management.

Professor Varma has handled various responsibilities in different capacities; working with Government of India, UN agency, a few international organizations. He is currently associated with women-children centric NGO- Aarohan– based in Delhi.  Besides, he has been associated, from time to time, with many esteemed Apex institutions in India like CII, ASSOCHAM; and academic institutions such as Amity University, IIFT; to name a few.

1) Please share about yourself and about the interesting book which you have written.

Well. I have been working in the social sector on women and children issues for more than thirty-five years. I have been an Alumnus and member of faculty (IIT-Kharagpur, India); having worked with an academic institution, Private Company, the government of India, national and international charities and the United Nations.

Presently I am working as a Consultant/ Technical Advisor to Aarohan–NGO based in Delhi. Also, receive invites to deliver lectures in plenary sessions at conferences. I am also an Author. The book is based on my long professional experience in the development sector on women and children’s issues.

2) Why did you choose to write on this topic? Any particular reason for it?

Human sufferings have always hurt me deeply even when I have not been in any position to do anything to alleviate it. Growing up as a development professional -the issue of human rights violations touched me deeply-often shaking my conscience and emotions. Such feelings increasingly got imbibed over the long years of working in social and developmental sectors particularly on women-centric issues.

What has been most unfortunate, reports about the low status of women in Indian society, gender-based differentiation; atrocities and crimes, physical and sexual assault; and unabashed practice of aborting female fetus has kept appearing in various media from time to time with religious regularity… but these have simply failed to evoke any desired response from appropriate quarters.

The first-hand exposure to such social maladies could be made possible during my visit (as part of official responsibilities) to community projects (donor-funded) across the length and breadth of the country. Meeting, interacting with project communities mainly women opened a sort of Pandora Box!

Strangulating female fetus –an act of denying someone the intrinsic right “to be born” not only defy all limits of barbarism, human sensitivity and civility…but also inflicts deep wounds – a permanent scar on a woman’s mind- could be known only while working in outreach with the community during which I was confronted with its resultant repercussions and deeper scars.

Such exposure shook me no end! One basic question which troubled me and also most of us, I presume: “How can anyone deny the basic human rights to the newborn?” How can fathers implanting the seed of a child into the woman’s womb kill if the fetus germinating in his wife’s womb is female?

Seen in this context, the book may be considered as an expression of mental anguish, a strong resolve to voice concerns, raise the issue in public domain, little realizing that the book may/is possibly is the very first comprehensive documentation on the problem of vanishing girls consequent to female feticide!

3) Who is Kamla (the protagonist of the book) and how she impacted you?

Well “Kamla” is a symbolic name! It symbolizes Girl! This name is most common across all socio-economic strata of the society- ranging from one living in rural India to urban slums, to late Smt. Kamla Naidu, as is the case of female fetus abortions!

4) For any problem, there has to be a solution. According to you, what solutions can you suggest for this big problem?

To my mind, two aspects are critical and must be taken up with all the seriousness.

These are- introducing a comprehensive course on India’s civilizations, culture, ethics and moral education at the primary level of schooling so that there are everlasting impressions on the impressionable mind of the children who grow up into adults with right values and balanced, unprejudiced mindset; and a strong programmatic approach which lays adequate emphasis on “converting perceived liabilities into lucrative economic assets!”

5) Which is your favourite book and any plans to write a new book in the coming future?

Well, you may laugh, but there are quite a few books among my favourites; such as “Tiger’s Tale” (by Late Mansoor Ali Khan of Pataudi, the former Captain of India Cricket Team); 20 Minutes at Entebbe ( on the famous incident of rescuing passengers aboard Israeli Airlines from Entebbe airport, Uganda); presently “ Romancing with Life”(an autobiography of Late Mr Dev Anand, the Indian film star).

I am planning a book on Transgender!

Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome Sakhee Dheer as a guest contributor at Womenlines. Sakhee leads Digital Marketing for APAC Global Business Marketing at Facebook Singapore, currently. In this article, Sakhee is sharing her understanding of Hinduism-

In today’s world where cultures across the world are battling biases, discrimination, hate speech and other anti-human behaviour, it is important to re-read some of the foundational texts and scriptures of our humanity and re-learn human fundamentals without the ones contaminated by centuries of greed, division and exploitation. In my quest to understand more and be more mindful of our existence, I have embarked to learn more about Hinduism and try to be more conscious of our history, bias and also goodness!

I recently wrote about how the last few months have forced each one of us to take a hard look at our how we lead our lives, what is important, what needs to be nurtured and what needs to be let go. In my quest to learn more about myself, our surroundings and cultural influences, I embarked on reading more and doing more. One question that has been with me all my adult life till now has been about who we are, what is our purpose in life and are we supposed to find our higher purpose? These questions keep me curious, ensure I am authentic at home and work, show care and try to genuinely listen and be empathetic.

Interestingly, I recently stumbled on a course by Harvard on Hinduism and in my quest to learn more about myself, go within, and possibly answer some existential questions!!!, I decided to give it a try. And what started as a simple desire to be equipped to have more meaningful conversations on my religion has ended with an explosive curiosity to know more. For those interested, here is the link to the course that I recommend to kick start your journey. Hinduism is known to be the oldest religion. It is called the Santana dharma or the eternal religion and no matter how deep I went into the course or my research alongside, I feel I haven’t even scratched the surface.

My readings have helped me understand how Hinduism has evolved over centuries, given the background to the religious practices and in many cases just some validation to things my elders have shared anecdotally. It has also helped me see some of the evils of Hinduism and allowed me to begin to build an objective view of how it has evolved over centuries. I also believe some of my findings have helped pick up deeper lessons on leadership, decision making, strategic action and mental steadfastness. After having begun my journey down this path, I strongly feel that many of us do not understand the essence of Hinduism, the goodness it has to offer and is stuck in the dogma that political leaders have created for their gains. Especially in today’s world where cultures across the world are battling biases, discrimination, hate speech and other anti-human behaviour, it is important to re-read some of the foundational texts and scriptures of our humanity and re-learn human fundamentals without the ones contaminated by centuries of greed, division and exploitation.

As I have made myself aware of the historical context of Hinduism, the revered scriptures of Vedas, Upanishads, Shrutis and Puranas, I feel strongly for what it has to offer. For me, Hinduism is a “way of life”. It is diverse and has something for everyone. In today’s times, the widespread popularity of yoga and meditation practices connected to fundamental Hindu practices are a case in point of the universality of the knowledge. The oldest scriptures Vedas and Upanishads talk about the connection with the environment and the existence of the Supreme Self. Both concepts are extremely important in today’s context. The Vedas and Upanishads are written in the form of hymns and philosophical discourse that point to real experiences sages then had, and explain the stages of attaining the realisation of consciousness. A concept I am blown over by. I am trying to internalise some of the teachings on the power of our mind, intellect and consciousness. I wish there was an easy way to experience this!

The power of Hinduism and the reason I believe it has survived all these years is the flexibility it has provided. In chronological order starting close to 15BCE, we have had multiple Hindu texts: Vedas->Upanishads->Smritis (Manusmriti)-> Ramayana->Mahabharat->Bhagavad Gita->Puranas->Bhakti texts -> Vernaculars. Each of the texts has evolved from the previous texts and they still carry the essence of Vedas and Upanishads. I have come to believe that at different junctures of human history, our ancestors added layers to the texts to match their context, whether it be to manage kingdoms or to govern during the colonial era. Some of the negative practices of caste and gender discrimination come from different eras but when we go back to the essence of Vedas of one Supreme Self and the connected Brahman (Universe) and Atman(Soul) all else seem just man-made alterations to very evolved scriptures of our ancient ancestors.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I have spent to learn more. For me, the saying from Bhagavad Gita, To be in the present moment and do all our actions without any expectation of result and attachment’ stands out. I find this such a powerful mantra for our present-day lives as well, where much of the outcomes of anything we do are dependent on so many different parameters than just our efforts. By being in the present, giving our best and not getting demotivated / arrogant by the outcomes will help us to continue to push, learn, grow, innovate, do good and help others irrespective of outcomes. Hinduism has such vast history over more than 3 Millenia, multiple powerful scriptures, timeless knowledge on ‘ways of life’, alignment with nature and overall wellbeing. Wish I could agree with it being just a religion, I think it is much more.

Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome Andrea Zsapka in ‘Entrepreneur of the Month’ show. Andrea Zsapka is a certified coach and personal branding expert. Born in Hungary, she made the decision to move to Malaysia and has been living in Kuala Lumpur for the past 4 years, teaching individuals how to make changes in their lives to follow their passions. She is also a bonafide dance instructor and may force you to do the tango if you pronounce ‘Zsapka’ wrongly.Read Andrea’s story in her own words and listen to her interesting entrepreneurial journey in the interview above-

I grew up in a loving family in a small town in Hungary. During my childhood days, my parents gave me wonderful opportunity to try my hand in all sorts of activities, from painting, taekwondo, debating, arts and craft, singing, dancing and playing the piano. I was very thankful for my parents for letting me find my passion. Letting me learn dancing was the biggest gift they could ever give me. Dancing taught me a lot about myself, life, people, connections, collaboration, respect. My family knows that it was not an easy ride for me. I would rather say it has been an emotional roller coaster. I have been dancing since I was six. My stubbornness and willpower brought me pretty good results. I won many competitions, I became a dance instructor, the leader of a dance association and I also started a dance school in Budapest.

Why this story is so special? Because while all this was happening I was having another life parallel to my dancer one. I went to a business school and got a diploma as Economist on Bank management and Stock Exchange faculty, (Yes, it is true) For more than 10 years I was working for big companies (8 am-6 pm) Right after work I was running to my dance classes, lessons, rehearsals. I was having my competitions on the weekends. I was doing OK in both fields, maintaining a life that was pleasing others around me, without analysing what is happening to me, with me. I was sleepwalking and rushing, no one knows where.

I got so far, that at one point I got married only because I wanted to please my family. Then it hit me, I woke up the next day, right after my special, beautiful day, and I knew this is not my choreography. I haven’t been living my life at all; I have been dancing a fake dance, without realizing what’s going on. I have to tell you this is not a good feeling, it is not liberating at all. It has the heavyweight of responsibility, guilt, regret, pain, depression. When something like this is happening, you feel lost. It is like you lived underwater for 30 years. You start to question your whole life; you start to think: it is because of the people around you, it is because of their evil plan to control you, and then you blame yourself for everything.

I wanted a fresh start. I got divorced and I started my life again searching for answers. The only thing I knew was that I love dancing, when I am on the dance floor I am not lying to myself, I am ME. I am deeply grateful and happy to have supporting friends and family who were there for me during this harsh period. I started to dance and learn the Argentine tango and other social dances as a follower you have to read the intentions of your dancing partner and follow all the moves that he is initiating. The moment of real connection makes you feel like you are part of something bigger. I have studied all aspects of dancing and its effect on people, starting with myself. As a result, I felt better and better. It took me around 4 years to get out of this negative valley, to get back to myself, to my shape, to my soul and to realize that everything is connected and all that has happened to me was part of a bigger plan.

Life made me: listen, sit down and create something unique, emerging from the bottom of my heart, awaken by the turn that my life took. All that I had to do was to concentrate on the one thing that I do best: make people feel better about themselves and their life choices. Help them get to know themselves better through dancing and just follow my instinct and my freshly found path. And just when I started to feel better, it happened again, for personal reasons, I had to move, the first time in my life I had to go to the other corner of the world. I had to leave everything and everyone behind: my family, my friends, my little dog, my dance school, my trainer job, my colleagues, my independence, and start again, third time at a different environment: in South, East Asia-Malaysia.

To see the end of the story just turn the page and the story continues: What happened after I moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia? This time there was a difference, I knew what to do, I knew my purpose. It took me a year to settle, got connected with the place and got over the cultural shock, the homesickness and all those things that all ex-pats are going through when they are starting over. It was hard but as I knew where I am heading the whole thing became part of the process. I accepted the fact that it takes time and commitment to start what I would like to do.

This time I was dancing my choreography I felt safe and aligned. And here we are in 2019, Within the last 3 years, I have created a new dance community. I am doing what I love. I became a Transformation coach, Art Therapist Life coach, Master Life Coach. I am conducting my dance classes and I started my dance therapy sessions. I participated at the MIG Mrs International Global Beauty contest in Malacca, as Mrs Hungary International Global, I organized a Salsa flash mob at the Connection Pavilion, I have my own company here in Malaysia, I have been the host in two short tourist movies to promote Malaysia for Hungarians, which has been aired in the Hungarian national TV. I visited 10 South East Asian country. I made many friends in my new home Malaysia from many different cultures, I had my very first press conference. I coached incredible ladies who helped me to get cultural insights to perfect my coaching methodology.

I am helping individuals to be their best selves and to realign their lives. From the bottom of my heart, I wish you all the power to make the decision I made: Change if you feel you are not at the right place and dare to ask for help from people who have already been there. As we say life is short, why not make the best of it, and don’t forget: together we are better, together we can accomplish more, together we can help more people. TOGETHER WE THRIVE GROW AND ELEVATE www.andreazsapka.com www.whatwomenwantworkshop.com

Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome Leadership Coach Sally Anderson from New Zealand as a guest influencer for Leadership at Womenlines panel. Sally has privately coached key influencers internationally: CEO’s/executive teams/C-Suite forums/entrepreneurs/celebrities/politicians/millionaires/billionaires over 20 years. This week Sally is sharing incredible tips to boost sales process-

Critical elements that should be mandatory with CLOSING specifically are:-

  1. EMOTIONAL CONNECTION is everything – Every sales exchange is a human to human interaction – SO to become masterful in closing EMOTIONAL CONNECTION is mission-critical
  2. STORYTELLING is crucial and needs to be a part of your sales exchange without fail
  3. OWN your space, respect who you are, have them come up to your level, never go down to their level
  4. NEVER get onto their court, get them onto your court or you will not win the game
  5. You are there to interview them NOT them interviewing you
  6. CLOSING has to do with your relationship with MONEY, so do the work to sort out your beliefs around MONEY! If you have an issue with money on ANY level, SORT IT OUT!
  7. Beliefs run EVERYTHING, what you attract is directly proportional to your beliefs – if you wish to shift what you are attracting SHIFT YOUR BELIEFS
  8. PRESS the bruise, get them present to the costs, you MUST understand their pain points/challenges and elicit these well before the close
  9. Fall in love with OBJECTIONS, always call it BEFORE they do – elevate the conversation otherwise, you are playing on their court – go looking for them
  10. OWN who you are, you have earnt the right to be a TELLER, sometimes when you own it you do not have to enrol you just tell them to SIGN
  11. STOP tolerating saying ‘I am not good at closing’, get the support ASAP the costs of not being too great
  12. Commitment = Results – where ever the results are being produced is a function of your current commitment…so folks if the results are not being produced in the area you say you are committed, I am here to tell you, you are NOT committed
  13. Your energy has to be as impactful in the close as it is in the enrolment phase if not more
  14. When you want to back out – GO IN, the gold lies in GOING IN – ALWAYS
  15. Be inappropriate, if you own it you will have the prospect have a breakthrough with the bullshit they are running – being inappropriate does not mean being rude, it means you are standing for a possibility beyond their default identity as they know it
  16. Stay the distance – do not sell out – park all future meaning-based projections on why someone has not come back to you – 9 times out of 10, if you are clean in your intent then its worth investing the time to stand for them coming back to you
  17. Do not waste time with people who have their radios off. Spend MORE time with those that have their radios on
  18. Self-deprecation works, framing upfront, use that which you operate over the top of as your trump card, LEAD WITH THIS!
  19. Match what they share with what you share so that the prospect feels like you understand their world – listen to their language, the language will ALWAYS tell you where you need to go in the conversation
  20. We all have unique fingerprints, we are all unique with different lessons to learn, one process does NOT apply to all – so in your journey to master closing get the right support unique to you to shift your own dynamic/s
  21. As human beings we all have a default disempowered identity, to understand your own and how it works is critical – this mechanism hinders you from achieving your potential – take time to understand this aspect of your identity
  22. Do not be STUCK with stayed linear hard skill sales structures, it’s a dance, read the intuitive signs, trust these signs and be lead by your powerful intuitive ability – the more you trust it the more you will receive through the power of intuition
  23. STOP SSD, being serious, significant and dramatic, (a function of this disempowered default identity I speak about) – make closing FUN, if you are not having fun in the sales exchange believe you me the prospect will not be having fun so LIGHTEN UP THE ENERGY, ‘sales is just a conversation’, nothing more nothing less – so dance
