Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome Vani Shukla as an Influencer for Yoga at Womenlines. Vani has been into Yoga and Fitness for more than 18years. She is a post-graduate in Yoga therapy from India. She was among the first few female fitness experts in Delhi to qualify American Council on Exercise exam in 2011.
Presently she lives in Adelaide Australia for the past five years and runs International Yoga Retreats and workshops. She has been interviewed by many local Australian radio stations including Channel 9 News. Read and listen to Vani’s interview above about her interesting journey in the field of Yoga in her own words-

I am Vani Shukla, born and raised in the heritage Indian city – Lucknow. My introduction to the Vedic mythology, traditions and its philosophy started at a very early age being part of an esteemed Brahmin family. Brahmin is a caste in Hinduism specializing as teachers (acharya) and protectors of sacred learning across generations, and therefore throughout my childhood, my family and teachers kept enriching me with the knowledge of primaeval epics, Ayurveda (ancient Indian medical science), Kathak (classical dance form), liberating mantras, philosophy of yoga, and spiritual sacraments of the Hindu culture that strengthened my belief and passion for the power of using scientific and cultural knowledge for the benefit of the society. This led me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in the science of Nutrition and Dietetics.

In 2003, when I was 18 and just started my Bachelor’s degree, sadly I lost both my parents a few months apart. The pain of loss coupled with the agonizing mental battle and bewilderment. From an energetic happy teenager, suddenly I isolated myself from society. Seeing my situation my friend introduced me to her Yoga teacher and here my foray into the world of Yoga came. Having a strong belief in ancient sciences and consistent practice of Yoga renewed my strength to face my new life and deal with the vacuum of losing both my parents. This experience changed me as a person and I was enthralled by the power of Yoga. I decided to inspire the people to lead a happy and healthy life by sharing this incredible knowledge of mind, body and soul.

With this burning desire to be able to change the lives of people towards positive living, I enrolled into Master’s of Science in Yoga Therapy at Kasturba Medical College, a renowned medical college in south India. During this course, I was lucky to learn more about Yoga and its philosophy, from a few of the most experienced teachers from the Southern part of India.

Even while pursuing my Master’s degree, I felt a deep urgency to find a Guru, who would guide me to enlighten my Yogic path. In this exploration of the spiritual master, I travelled across the length and breadth of India and visited many ashrams. My search ended in Rishikesh when I finally met Swami Veda Bharti in December 2006. Swami Veda was the disciple of Swami Rama of the Himalayas (founder of Himalayan Yoga Tradition). He has guided many scholars in their numerous fields and I was privileged enough to be accepted as his student. The journey since then has been one of continuous spiritual growth and abundant blessing.

When your dreams don’t let you sleep, you simply wake up and work hard! After completing my education in 2007, I started sharing Yoga in its deepest form in order to enable people to make long-lasting modifications in their habits and lifestyle to achieve good health and complete well-being. During the next eight years, I was able to touch many lives by cultivating Yoga teachings in different multinational corporations; health clubs, residential societies, old age care centres, orphanages and hospitals.

I was delighted to know that I have been able to change lives, from curing simple health ailments like migraine, insomnia, headaches, obesity, stress to even helping some people quit smoking and give up alcohol. I also got the privilege to inculcate Yoga practice and re-emphasize the importance of flexibility and mindfulness in a Sports Center run by Indian Cricketer M.S Dhoni in New Delhi.

Whilst I was busy in accomplishing my passion of teaching Yoga, In 2015 I got an opportunity to live in Australia, as a Yogi trait I love travelling and exploring a new world, I decided to move to Australia.

Currently, I am living in Adelaide with my husband and continuing my Yoga journey with beautiful people in this city. I conduct classes at various renounced Yoga centres, besides organizing successful workshops and retreats (local & international) and guiding students in safe traditional Yoga through a variety of postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama) and meditation. I personally love teaching Meditation and Yoga philosophy and make sure that it has been incorporated into my teaching.

For the past couple of years, I have been doing volunteering at multiple organizations to teach Yoga and increase awareness of Indian/Yoga philosophy, including the University of South Australia, Hindu Council of Australia-SA chapter and United Indians of South Australia

I am a Karma Yogi and intensely believe in the philosophy of Karmas- What goes around, comes around! Continuing my beliefs and passion, I hope I will keep serving people throughout my life.

Sarve Bhavantu Sukinaha,Sarve Santu Niramayah !
(May all be happy, may all be disease less.)

Namaste!

Womenlines loves to get empowering and informative content for all readers, viewers and followers from across the globe. Womenlines is delighted to welcome the organisation as a sponsor for the content related to ‘How to prevent and thrive with Cancer’ under ‘Health’ segment. Enlightening content from Cancer Awakens is going to empower people with the right mindset and knowledge to prevent cancer and to thrive with it if one is diagnosed with it.

Physical lifestyle factors like diet, exercise, rest, personal habits and environmental factors can adversely affect your health. If you can discover your physical stressors and what triggers them, you can take specific and targeted actions to recover from them.

How is your body doing? What are your strengths and stressors?

The key factors in maintaining optimum physical health are diet, exercise, rest & relaxation, personal habits (smoking/ alcohol) and sociability & laughter. Here are some guidelines and questions to get you thinking.

Diet

  • Consuming more fresh vegetables, fruit, whole grains and nuts regulates the production of adrenaline and boosts immunity. (A simple rule of thumb is to eat a ‘rainbow diet’ i.e. try and get all the seven colours of the rainbow on your plate, during every meal).
  • Question: What colours are usually missing from your diet?
  • Consuming foods with a low GI or Glycemic Index (less than 55) regulates sugar levels in the blood; this stabilizes our moods and energy. Here’s an interesting discussion on low glycemic index foods.
  • Question: How GI-friendly is your diet?
  • Drinking 2 litres (8 normal size glasses) of water daily, in addition to all its other benefits, also improves neural activity and regulates the production of various hormones.
  • Question: How much water do you have on a typical day?

Exercise

  • 20 minutes of aerobic exercise counters and neutralizes the previous 24 hours of adrenalisation. (An additional 10 min aerobic exercise protects against the next 12 hours of adrenalisation.)
  • Question: How much aerobic exercise do you get in a normal week?

Rest & Relaxation

  • 7-8 hours of sleep is optimum, both for rest and repair at the muscular and cellular level.
  • Question: How much sleep do you get routinely?
  • Deep sleep (brain waves at Delta state) is important for the long term health and repair of the brain itself.
  • Question: Do you enjoy deep, restful sleep?
  • 30 minutes in a meditative state provides the same benefits as 6 hours normal sleep
  • Question: Do you practice restful awareness (meditation, Tai-chi, yoga etc.)?

Sociability & Laughter

  • Spending 60 minutes once a week with close friends in a purely social (non-work related) setting produces high levels of endorphins
  • Question: How much time do you spend socialising with close friends every week?
  • 20 minutes of ‘belly-laughs’ every day give us a significant rush of endorphins. (This explains the global popularity of laughter-clubs!)
  • Question: Are you getting your share of belly laughs?

Personal Habits – Smoking/ Alcohol

It is medically well accepted that smoking is a major cause of cancer. But did you know that heavy drinkers develop cancer at a rate 10 times higher that the general population … and worse still, that their combination is lethal?

Dr Jeremy Geffen, in his book The Journey Through Cancer, points out: “While the link between smoking and cancer has been well-established, the link between alcohol and cancer, although well-established, is less known to the public. Alcohol seems to amplify the effects of carcinogens, particularly tobacco smoke. It causes irritation to tissues of the mouth, esophagus, larynx, stomach and liver in ways that might contribute to cancer. It also increases the risk of breast and colo-rectal cancer, through other mechanisms.”

  • Question: What does your smoking/ alcohol profile look like?

Reflection

  • Review your key lifestyle factors. What are your primary physical stressors? What changes/ improvements can you make?
  • How often are you ‘high’ on the adrenalin rush? How addicted are you to its buzz?
  • What are your strategies to release the  ‘feel-good’ endorphins in your body?
  • How do you balance the negative effects of your physical stressors with calm and tranquillity?

The Holistic Health Questionnaire (HHQ) will help you understand your stressors. To take the free test, please visit hhq.cancerawakens.com

Don’t wait for the Change, Be the change”- a famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi!

For some people, this is a quote but few people have followed it in reality to become a real-life change they want to see around. Mr Prabhakar Rao C.M from Bangalore, who has taken right action following this quote, has shared with Womenlines his real life-changing experience which is helping him to live life with some incredible mission-

Mr Prabhakar Rao C.M, Aged 48, & more popularly known as GoGreen Rao in Indian Cycling forum. An IT Professional having 25 years of IT Experience, Last worked as a CIO with one of the leading Garments exporter company in Bangalore, taking care of their IT infrastructure. At the end of 2013, he quit his full-time job and opted to follow his passion for saving the environment.

He is the Founder member of http://www.gogreengocycling.org/ which started in the year 2008. The group consists of professionals from various background, who are putting their efforts in promoting Cycling in B’lore & other parts of the country. Their main aim is to create awareness on Cycling, its health benefits & opt for a traffic-free & pollution free city eventually working towards saving Mother Nature by stopping “Global Warming” Born & Bought up In a place called Gangavathi also known as “Rice Bowl of Karnataka” (390Km from Bangalore ) surrendered by paddy field greenery.

His Inspiration for starting this “Go Green Go Cycling” Campaign came up after his Boss Mr Raju Mahtaney gave him a DVD with a title “An inconvenient truth” (http://www.climatecrisis.net/trailer/a documentary movie about Global warming, directed by Davis Guggenheim, presented & narrated by former the United States Vice President Al Gore. After watching this movie, He started thinking about contributing his part-time & his family time to Mother Nature. He chooses Cycling to be one of the best modes of payback to Mother Nature as it not only helps to save fossil fuel and is environmentally friendly but also gives out various personal benefits like keeps us fit & healthy, saves money & on top of all it helps in preserving Mother Nature. In September 2008, he decided to put his car off the road which was contributing to the pollution and traffic jams, then he started cycling to the office. In the beginning, he ensured to cycle twice a week to his office and do his bit to the Mother Nature but within few weeks he realized, cycling alone to office would not suffice the need of hour hence shared his concept of Going Green by Cycling with his fellow colleagues, few of them joined but very soon they stopped. This is when he shared his thoughts and his concept of Cycling to the office on the internet through a blog post where he quoted “Go Green, for a better tomorrow, Go Cycling”. The kind of positive response from unknown people was amazing. They not only liked the concept they also were ready to cycle and be part of the initiative. This was the beginning of the GoGreen family. Though he started alone, after a few years they had 4000+ like-minded professional from various backgrounds who have registered as members of GoGreen & number is growing day after day. He along with his group has successfully organized around 630+ Sunday GoGreen IRP (I Ride with Pride) Campaign rides, riding a distance ranging from of 25 to 200+ km.

The GoGreen IRP Campaign Ride starts from South B’lore JP Nagar by 6:30 am and ride towards Cubbon Park Central library which is the central meeting place where other members from various parts of the city meet and pick a predefined destination and ride. They cycle along the city roads to spread the awareness of Going Green through Cycles, at the same time they also train the newly joined members to bring in the confidence of cycling with the traffic, eventually converting them and making them independent from Fossil Fuels. “Say No to Co2 (Carbon dioxide ) by saying yes to C2O (Cycle to Office)” & “I Ride With Pride” are Mr GoGreen Rao’s quotes & further he says “ Don’t wait for the Change, Be the change” is one of his favourite quote on which the entire campaign is revolving. while being asked about his Mission & Vision, he says his Mission is “Give back to Mother Nature and Save Mother Nature” and His Vision is to “ Create separate lanes for motor vehicles on all the existing roads and dedicate the rest of road for Cycles.” He has received several recognitions from various organization appreciating his efforts & promoting cycling and initiating GoGreen in the city & other places, “Bangalore Youth Award”, “Bicycle Bull of India 2018 Award” & very recently REX “Karmaveer Chakra award” instituted by iCONGO & UnitedNations are few prestigious awards that were received during the past 11 years of his campaign.

Yafot wellness in Singapore is offering Homeopathic consultancy under Dr Charuta Deshpande, who is having an incredible experience and knowledge, which she wants to use by helping out people suffering from various illnesses especially in a holistic way. Book a free consultation with Dr Charuta Deshpande at Yafot Wellness to have an understanding of how homoeopathic way of treatment can be helpful to you. As an Influencer at Womenlines panel, Dr Charuta is sharing an insightful article on role of Homeopathy in boosting immunity-

How can you improve your immune system? If you feel that you are coming down with allergies quite often and taking time to recover, have a feeling of tiredness most of the times, experiencing unreasonable aches and pains or not sleeping well – it might mean that you’re your immune system isn’t functioning optimally. A ‘healthy you’ is a result of harmonious functioning of various local and general systems to maintain homeostasis. (Homeostasis refers to any process that living things use to actively maintain fairly stable conditions necessary or survival) These include your immune system, respiratory system, musculoskeletal system and so on. ‘Psycho-neuro-endocrine-immune’ axis is the most pivotal health regulatory axis, which when disturbed is the root cause of most of the chronic illnesses.

Homoeopathy is a therapeutic technique that initiates the process of recovery by stimulating the body’s own homeostatic system to maintain good health. That means homoeopathy in a way boosts the body’s natural systems to function at their optimum. Hence the betterment achieved is permanent and long-lasting, addressing the root cause of the illness.

Homoeopathy taps on the bodies potential to heal itself. Homoeopathic remedy internally sets up with the body for a positive reaction by stimulating the body’s natural mechanisms to function optimally. Thus, in the case of eczema, while it addresses the local lesions, it also tries to bring back the normal functioning of the immune and skin system. So, as the skin starts improving, there is no going back as now your previously deranged immune and local skin systems are performing normally.

In the current times, chronic diseases, like hypertension, asthma, gastritis, IBS, psoriasis, eczema, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, insomnia pose the greatest danger to our mortality, to our overall health. Stress has found to be a direct trigger or an underlying maintaining cause for development and maintenance of such illnesses. All these chronic illnesses are a result of the inability to notice the early red flags or mismanagement of these. The high-pressure modern life with its insistence on instantaneous relief, many times we are forced to opt for symptomatic reliefs. But when you seek such support in a series, it is eventually taking a toll on your bodies natural defence system by curbing its normal action even before it starts.

To summarize, Homeopathy, instead of trying to attack a specific problem, tries re-establish health by attempting to stimulate bodies natural defence systems in a gentle, safe and natural manner to produce long-term health benefits.

It’s not just recognition but the award is a placement of trust on your shoulders to own more Individual Social Responsibility to do more and move up the awards hierarchy and the fellowship is that starting point.”

“We congratulate  Charu Mehrotra for possessing the conviction and compassion to stand up, speak out and lead the change with his/her positive attitude! The best part of the fellowship is everyone comes here thinking they are doing little or more than others and then we meet people who are doing more or less than us and we realise that there is no big and small deed, all ideas for action and actions matter as every little big change we create makes the big difference. Thus we all realise the power of ONE by coming Together as One to RIGHT every WRONG and hence experience and share THE JOY OF GIVING,” Almeida added.
