Series 3 Talk on the topic ‘Women Empowerment’ by Founder Womenlines Charu Mehrotra at Bringle Academy

Friends, tell me what do you understand by being healthy!

Most of you will mention that leading life without any illness means you are healthy. I agree with you to a certain extent. It means leading life without illness but there are certain other parameters which determine your health status. Physical, Mental and Spiritual health together contribute to making you feel healthy in a holistic way.

Womenfolk mostly mention that they don’t have time to exercise, take care of their diet and look after their health in such a holistic way. But tell me, friends, if you are not healthy, fit and happy yourself then how you can put efforts to take care of your family. No kid will ever like to see his or her mother falling ill or unhappy. As an individual only you have to be responsible for all parameters of health and take care of yourself properly. As there is a famous quote- “The world will see you as you see yourself”!

So the first step is to be responsible for yourself. Educate yourself about how you can be healthy. Nowadays so many health experts are sharing amazing information across social media. Follow such certified influencers who are popular and experienced. Same goes with fitness influencers. Once you have your favourite influencers you cam regularly follow them and get tips for exercise and fitness in daily routine. Taking care of diet and fitness comes under physical health.

Now comes the zone of mental health. How are your emotions running you? How are you communicating with yourself? Good health is extremely important for overall well being. Researches show that women suffer from depression more than men. Start making happiness a choice in life. Find reasons to laugh more instead of being in complaining mode. Journal your thoughts. Express gratitude, be mindful to destress yourself by following certain hobby like dance, painting, walking etc.

Spiritual health zone is quite new and not everybody believes in it. Those who believe in supreme power then how they connect with that power establishes their spiritual health. It is your connection with supreme power, disciplined lifestyle with values, connection with the environment, connection with the others who are around you and your surroundings. It is all about leading a purposeful life. Good spiritual health will help you to live authentic living and not get lost in materialistic living. It is the degree we honour connectedness with supreme power and surroundings!

Womenlines loves to get empowering and informative content for all readers, viewers and followers from across the globe. Womenlines is delighted to welcome the organisation ‘Cancer Awakens’  as a sponsor for the content related to ‘How to prevent and thrive with Cancer’ under ‘Health’ segment. Enlightening content from Cancer Awakens is going to empower people with the right mindset and knowledge to prevent cancer and to thrive with it if one is diagnosed with it. This month Dr Niraj Mehta, MD a Medical Director, Radiation Oncology based in Miami, USA IS sharing how dance movement therapy can aid cancer treatment-

Many people who have tried dance movement therapy rave about its results. They feel physically and mentally recharged. Further, it is said to aid healing and slow down ageing.

Some call it dance.
Others call it movement meditation.
Still others call it presence.

What is dance movement therapy?

It is simply moving your body to change choreographies, regardless of your ability to coordinate. You focus on getting therapeutic benefits from your rhythmic movements rather than how graceful you look. It also aids healing, slows down ageing and improves immunity. That’s why some call it “natural immunotherapy” or “mind-body medicine”. Some scientists prefer psychoneuroimmunology.

There are many types of physical exercise. Research demonstrates that two specific types, vix endurance training and “dancing,” enhance the areas of the brain that generally degenerate with age. However, only dancing leads to behavioural changes with respect to improving balance. This is due to the additional task of learning the dance routine.

Does dance movement therapy actually work?

A cohort of elderly volunteers were assigned to either:

  • sporting group, incl. endurance, strength and flexibility
  • Or a dance group, incl. changing choreographies that needed to be memorised

Findings

  • Both groups showed an increase in the area of the brain known as the hippocampus (susceptible to age-related decline – memory, learning and balance).
  • But only the dance group showed a volume increase in more subfields of the left hippocampus and one subfield of the right hippocampus.
  • In essence, while both are good, changing choreographies was superior to repetitive exercise. But this doesn’t mean that endurance exercise is not important.

How dance movement therapy aids cancer treatment

According to the Cancer Society, dance increases endorphin levels in the brain and makes one feel comfortable and secure. Besides, dancing or moving the body in a rhythmic way also activates other body systems. This helps to stay healthy and fit.

Specifically for cancer patients, the benefits of dance movement therapy include:

  • Developing a suitable body tone, image, and self-acceptance.
  • Improving confidence and self-awareness.
  • Learning to express and control feelings.
  • Learn to sort out problems and take proper decisions.
  • Dance movement therapy also helps cancer patients better deal with life’s various challenges.
  • Resuming and personification after any traumatic experiences.
  • Learning to face relationship challenges like sexuality or intimacy and improving relationship skills.
  • Dance movement therapy when conducted in group sessions also help to combat feelings of “why me?”.

What if I just can’t dance?

The effects of dance movement therapy are independent of your perceived ability to move (or even your resistance to “dancing”). Rather, they depend on the extent of your involvement and your connection with the music. If you have “two left feet”, or consider yourself “rhythmically challenged”, have no fear. Movement is innate. Focus on your connection to the music. And let the benefits serve and move you.

Reflection

  • How ‘mobile’ are you on a daily basis? How sedentary is your lifestyle?
  • What is the best way to integrate dance movement therapy with your treatments?
  • Physical fitness, mental health or just having fun … what are you looking to achieve through dance movement therapy?

Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome Elaine Jacques in the ‘Entrepreneur of the Month’ show at Womenlines!

Elaine Jacques is an International Coach Federation certified coach and a medical Speech-Language Pathologist. Elaine’s coaching focuses on answering the questions:  What’s your big goal? and What’s one thing you can do today? Her holistic coaching approach draws from evidence-based research in neuroscience, emotional intelligence, appreciative inquiry, positive psychology, mindfulness, and strengths. One of her secret superpowers is calmly and effectively communicating during life and death/high-stress situations.

Listen and read about her interesting journey in her own words-

1. Please share with our reader’s little bit about yourself!

My career path has gone from international education (teaching English as a Foreign Language in southern Taiwan when I was 18) to filling a variety of administrative/executive assistant/HR/payroll/customer service/event planning roles after graduating with my bachelor’s degree. Then finding myself feeling bored and unchallenged and going back to school to earn my master’s degree in medical speech pathology when I was 28. And after doing that for 13 years, becoming restless again and adding International Coach Federation coach certification to my list of certifications (along with accent modification instructor and body language trainer!) The terms I resonate with are ‘multipotentialite’ and ‘lifelong learner’.

2. So when did you start working and what inspired or motivated you to take a plunge into your present venture?
I did not grow up in an affluent family. And I was tall for my age, so I started working when I was about 12 years old to help pay for my school expenses. I cleaned houses, was a caregiver for several people, did babysitting, washed dishes in a restaurant, cashiered at a grocery store, did chores for neighbours, etc. All of those jobs taught me time management skills and the importance of having a good work ethic, so I could earn and keep people’s trust and respect. Having jobs that weren’t all that much fun inspired me to keep pushing forward to get my education so that I could have better jobs and make a better life for myself.
In the hospital setting, many of the patients I work with are very sick and are in their final chapter of life. So after 13 years of hospital speech pathology work, I finally took the plunge into moving myself in a new direction! Three years ago, I started on my coaching journey to be part of having a positive impact on peoples’ lives who would then go on to live and benefit from my work with them!

3. Can you share with us some of the challenges you faced during your initial days?

It is humbling to “start over” and be treated like a “newbie” even when you have 20+ years of work experience and a pretty broad background in education, business, marketing, training, supervision, medical work, etc. It can feel like none of your “prior experience” is worthwhile. And it can feel like you are “throwing away” your education by going into something new that doesn’t require that degree. Working part-to-full time and taking a heavy load of classes is exhausting and can feel insurmountable at times. And begging people to let you coach them to fulfil coaching hours can make you question your decision as well! And then working two careers plus all the rest of life’s responsibilities can feel like a self-imposed sleep deprivation torture sentence.

4. So how do you balance your personal and professional life?

As difficult as it can be to try to find balance, especially when things seem to constantly shift and change; remembering to take care of yourself (eat right, get some exercise, give yourself at least short breaks – even just to stare out the window for 2 minutes, listen to a short meditation/favorite pick-me-up song, etc.) can help to offset the overwhelm and your stress level. I have struggled with this a lot – especially with sleep deprivation in the last year. Sometimes you have to look at yourself in the mirror and say “I did my best and tomorrow is another day.”

5. What would you suggest to other aspiring women who want to venture out on their own?

Talk to people who are already doing it. Ask them what they would have liked to have known/done differently when they first started. Find a mentor or support group – or create your own from your circle of friends and family and online connections. Save cards/emails/notes that people give you to thank you for your work with them – you will need those to look at when you are having a ‘less-than’ day – to remind yourself why you are doing this! Be willing to ask for recommendations and feedback so you can continue to improve – and build your credibility.

6. Is there any person who has mentored/supported/inspired you?

One of my bachelor program professors who mentored me gave this reminder: “You can’t take credit for what you do right if you won’t take responsibility for what you do wrong.”
One of my first bosses in my hospital work always supported me when anyone tried to undermine me. It helped me gain the confidence I needed to have her steadfast support while I was still learning.
I have wonderful friends who support and inspire me. Some are friends since childhood and university. Some are friends whom I have become very close to just in the last 2 years from our interactions on LinkedIn. I like to say that friends are family you get to choose.

7. What do you have in the pipeline for your venture’s future development?

I will likely always be adding to my certifications so that I can continue to be an increasingly better coach for my clients!
And I am continuing to become more clear on who I enjoy working with the most, and what areas of coaching I am the most well-suited to be of value for my clients.
I am going to continue to stretch my comfort zone to do training, workshops, webinars, and public speaking.
And I will continue to be open to collaborations with other amazing people to support their work, and benefit even more people through our work together.

If you want to learn about ‘Executive Presence’ connect with Elaine on Linkedin at https://www.linkedin.com/in/elainejacques/.

Womenlines wishes best of luck and success to Elaine for all her future initiatives!

Book a free consultation with Dr Charuta Deshpande at Yafot Wellness to have an understanding of how homoeopathic way of treatment can be helpful to you. As an Influencer at Womenlines panel, Dr Charuta is sharing an insightful article on the importance of strong immune system to fight Cancer-

The vitality of our Immune response

Magic bullet! is what I call it. It’s amazing how our defence (immune) system can recognize and defend against dangerous foreign agents, called pathogens – viruses, bacteria, parasites. Human immunity primarily defends the organism from pathogens and attacks when necessary. When our healthy immune system fails, that’s when cancer and many other illnesses develop. Thus, an effective, well-functioning immunity is what determines health.

Normal body processes like wound healing, cell growth and multiplication, good sleep, metabolic processes like digestion, respiration and importantly mental-emotional balance is a function of our healthy immune responses in coordination with the neuro (nervous) – endocrine (hormonal) systems. When this Army – immune system; which is alert at all times —- gets distracted, goes to sleep or acts crazy – that’s when we manifest a disease. The suboptimal immune function has been found to be a primary cause in attracting various diseases, from chronic allergies to cancers, autoimmune disorders, psychosomatic disorders and mental health disturbances.

Many are being diagnosed with cancer, the remaining have some dear one affected by it. With the growing incidence of cancer, the success rate of beating Cancer medically and otherwise is growing too. All said and done, it’s high time that we start talking about ‘Preventing Cancer’. Cancer is an outcome when our immune system fails to recognize the abnormally growing cells of the body. Hence preserving a healthy functioning immunity is the full proof way to prevent cancer.

5 RED FLAGS that indicate a low functioning immune system:

  1. Feeling of tiredness (fatigue) or loss of enthusiasm continuously for more than 3weeks when you are sleeping considerably well, eating well and not overly stressed or more than 6weeks when under a stressful situation.
  2. Recurrent allergic/ viral/bacterial infections – falling sick recurrently with or without exposure to the source of infection.
  3. Taking more time than normal to recover from an acute illness – like viral flu’s, tonsillitis, throat infections, gastric or respiratory upsets.
  4. Suffering from a chronic illness for many years and taking some form of continuous treatment.
  5. Any significant change in your sleep cycles, appetite, energy levels, bowel movements and if that continues for more than 3weeks even after the stressful event has passed away.

3 reasons, that can lower your IMMUNITY:

  1. Chronic stress – anything that makes you feel on the edge, upset, frustrated, exhausted and anxious for 4-5 weeks or more
  2. Sudden or Prolonged emotions of fear, shock, grief, financial loss, harm, deception and insecurity
  3. Disturbed sleep or Insomnia, inappropriate wake and sleep cycles, delayed meal times, excessive physical or mental exertion

If you are reading this article and you feel you might want to discuss how to get back your healthy immunity, please feel free to drop a WhatsApp message at +65 86726918 or email at charutadeshpande@outlook.com

Stay tuned to Womenlines, next month Dr Charuta will share about how Homeopathic remedies can help to boost your immune responses naturally without any side effects in the upcoming article ‘Homeopathic remedies: an effective way to boost you Immunity’

Womenlines takes pleasure to share about a wonderful initiative by an organisation SCHOOL (Society of Community Health-Oriented Operational Links), which is very passionately working on very interesting projects with the teenage group (10 to 19) and also with the elderly group (60+) in India, with the intention to provide the best support system to them while engaging other sectors around too.
This month SCHOOL founder Dr Benazir Patil has shared about a ‘Healthy Ageing’ initiative ‘Adding life to years’ in Pune city in India, where SCHOOL volunteers team spends time with an elderly population and involve them in activities which create enthusiasm in them.it.
This is an ONGOING field project of SCHOOL is currently self-funded by the organization-

Many people are living longer in India, but not everyone who is living longer is adding ‘healthy years’ to their lives. With increasing economic pressures and shifting family roles, traditional ways of caring for the elderly have become difficult to maintain, leaving many senior citizens without a support network. Hence, SCHOOL is working with the elderly with a unique approach to undertaking activities based on their needs and demands.

SCHOOL is working on a field implementation program in 2 slums of Pune city (Kasturba and Indira Vasahat, Aundh), where they are working with 490 elderly women and men, with a focus on ‘intergenerational dialogue’ wherein the youths and adolescents are working as volunteers and undertake visiting activities that include one-on-one dialogue, excursion walks and counselling for the elderly. They organize group sessions and activities that primarily respond to-

  1. The queries on different government schemes and health issues.
  2. Interests and learning through activities that help in being more active and productive, such as Yoga, Dance, Music, Art, Training and Picnics.

Approach

Working with the elderly to generate dialogue, create enthusiasm to be active and look after themselves, and garner support for the most vulnerable and needy.

Objectives

  • Improve the status of older people and increase their feeling of ‘inclusiveness’ in society
  • Enhance awareness on the needs of older people and increase support through an intergenerational approach

Activities

  • Group sessions on Yoga, Health Care, Art and Training for Livelihood Generation
  • Visiting services: One-on-one dialogue; excursion walks; meetings and counselling sessions
  • Maintaining a tracking sheet of each elderly person and update the same on a quarterly basis
  • Providing commodities: Diapers, Walkers, Hearing Aid and others
  • Linkages with the government schemes for health, livelihood, nutrition and pensions
  • Linkages with the public health system for all ailments
  • Monthly excursion visits/ picnics to nearby locations of interest (picnic with a concept decided by the elderly)
  • Organizing health check-up sessions for specific problems like NCDs, Eye-care and Orthopaedic
  • Linkages with the old age homes
  • Advocacy meetings with the officials at all levels
  • Building community volunteers and community support mechanisms
  • provide friendship and companionship

Outcomes

  • Increasing self-confidence and reduced isolation amongst the elderly
  • Improving access to services, programs and schemes
  • Improving awareness on older people’s concerns, challenges and problems

The women love to participate in group activities, they all decide what they want to do in the next session. They talk, laugh and also cry when they get emotional during the discussions, especially when they recall their olden days and cherished moments. They often share that after many years they are enjoying like this, they came up with their demands like wanting to go for a picnic, wanting to dance, wanting to sing, wanting to learn, wanting to do some income generation for themselves. One greatest thing they saw in the team as – they now have listeners! and there is so much they wanted to share!

The men refused to come for weekly sessions. They said – “What the hell – we are not kids!” Then youth volunteers started with data collection and while doing that (each personal session meant about 45 minutes of time they made the men talk about themselves), the men were so delighted, they started saying, for the first time, someone is asking what we like, what we want, otherwise you social workers only want to work for pregnant women, girl child, mother-in-law participation, education for children and all that – nobody asked us ever if we can also participate! And now, THEY have men also participating in group activities.

There is a set of elderly people in the community – which is extremely vulnerable, some are ailing, and some are totally bed-ridden. The team is working with them for getting their check-ups done, for hospitalization which is needed for immediate care, helping them register with old age homes and provision of commodities like adult diapers ad tripod sticks. Our one on one sessions with the elderly is the best ever intervention, as that brings in liveliness, enthusiasm, comfort and feeling of having regular family members visiting them.

Womenlines wants to request readers to help SCHOOL in whatever possible way (financially, volunteer, supporter, partnership) to help them to deliver successful projects, which can be a real help to that section of society which is actually looking forward to a helping hand, to live a better life!

Uplift- Network for Inspiration is a networking group which organises networking meet in Singapore so that people can meet, learn, and get inspiration together. Uplift Networking Group is an initiative by e-Magazine Womenlines founded by Charu Mehrotra and Dream Catchers founded by Shalima Motial in Singapore. The Uplift group believes that just like food, inspiration doses are must in the present rush in daily life. Therefore on the Uplift facebook page founders keep sharing inspirational stories, quotations, videos every week.

The Uplift group organized splendid Diwali Uplift Meet on 9th Oct at Myra’s @Stadium.The meet started with sharing from founders of Uplift, Shalima Motial and Charu Mehrotra who highlighted about the reasons behind establishing Uplift group. It was a full house meet which included an empowering talk on the topic ‘Happiness is a choice’ by Brahmkumari Sister Ratna. Very beautifully she shared thoughts about what is happiness, why we should not keep our happiness limited to materialistic achievements and why it is important to shift one’s focus to sources of internal happiness. Another insightful talk was conducted by Vastu Consultant Brinda on the topic of what to take care while celebrating Diwali as per Vastu. Participants who were in beautiful ethnic dresses networked with each other and got to know more about each other’s work profile. Dance on foot-tapping Bollywood numbers, lovely songs sung by the participants and beautiful bonding between all the participants made it a very memorable evening.

Uplift meets highlight that networking is not only collecting cards and approaching each other for business. It is about, connecting with a fellow person, understanding each others problems, exchanging knowledge, finding out solutions, looking out for opportunities to grow and also have some fun together. Networking allows striving for excellence by motivating, sharing and caring for each other along the journey. Face-to-face networking creates lasting impressions in the minds of the people we meet. As individuals, we need motivation, connection, bonding, and support from people who have the same mindset.
