Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome Shirley Taylor as a guest Influencer at Womenlines panel. Shirley is a leading authority on business writing and communication skills and an international bestselling author. In her article, Shirley is highlighting how important it is to give a human touch to your emails-

And there lies the key. As humans, we have the one quality that robots and A.I don’t have, and that is the very quality that we are human!

Let’s face it, online every day we’ve all been asked to “tick the boxes showing which photos include traffic lights. Other online forms get straight to the point and ask us to prove you are human.

Surely this should also apply when we put our fingers on the keyboard to write emails?

Proving we are human in our business emails means we must:

  • write like a warm, friendly 2019 human being
  • write appropriately for the situation and the reader
  • be courteous and professional always
  • keep messages simple, clear and understandable
  • make messages easy to scan
  • let readers know exactly what to do and how to reply

Proving we are human means we should NOT:

  • write like a boring, monotone, 1920s template
  • send rushed messages with poor sentence construction
  • use jargon, acronyms and emojis in business emails
  • write long-winded messages
  • make readers hunt around trying to figure out how to reply
  • leave readers wondering how to reply

In our fast-paced, ever-changing, high-tech world, it’s up to us as humans to make a

human difference.

So… are you proving you’re human?

Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome guest contributor  Vijayalakshmi Veluchamy, founder, Public speaking mentor @ Jump Out Kids – a venture in building a confident next generation. She is also a Senior Recruitment Consultant by profession. This month Vijaya is sharing a very insightful article on why parents should prioritize developing Public Speaking Skills in their children-

In today’s digital world children at an early age are exposed to a wide range of information through computers, television, mobile phones, tabs and their social circle, so with every child being so well informed, aware and knowledgeable what makes a child stand out?

Yes, it’s their ability to express and communicate to the world. If you can speak you are heard, looked upon and recognised. If you can’t speak up, no one knows what u know.

So Let’s see the benefits of developing Public Speaking Skills in children:

  • Starting the Journey early:

Public Speaking is a life skill like swimming and life skills are best learnt at an early age. The earlier they acquire the skills the lesser the opportunities they lose. By their teens, they get very conscious of being judged by people, so when this skill is developed early, they gain the confidence to face the world. So start early and get the fear out of the child.

  • Building Connections:

Effective Communication plays an important part in building relationships. Kids who can better express themselves have lots of friends around them. A healthy social life is an essential part of growing up. Connecting with people is a skill they develop which is vital in every stage of their life.

  • Increased Self-Esteem and Confidence:

When children are able to fearlessly express their views and ideas to the world they feel confident, identified and accepted. Every time the child stands up and speaks, it creates positive self-esteem and with every following attempt, their confidence levels increase much fold.

  • Leadership Qualities:

Great orators have always drawn great admiration and support. Many are still remembered for their remarkable speeches. Children who can speak up and influence other children are always looked upon and given leadership roles. This is a great morale booster for the child.

  • Academic Benefits:

Schools provide immense opportunities to showcase their public speaking skills, be it reading aloud a passage, reciting a simple show and tell or presenting a class project. These little opportunities when taken up by the child creates immense confidence and helps them get noticed. Those who stay away from these opportunities are unfortunately left behind and this gap grows with age unless any positive step is taken.

  • Art of Persuasion:

Getting people to listen to you and convincing them to agree on your ideas is the main goal of delivering a speech. So kids automatically develop the art of persuasion through public speaking. The power to influence others through your speech is a great potential. Leaders are great persuaders. Acquiring this art at an early age is a priceless gift.

Hence public speaking skills would help them to bring out their best, shine and stand out in the crowd. So help them develop the skill at an early stage, to cherish its benefits throughout their liFE.

Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome  Kristin Engvig, founder and CEO of  Women’s International Networking (WIN) and WIN Conference in the ‘Entrepreneur/Professional of the Month Show’ at Womenlines. Watch her interview in the video above where she is sharing about her passionate work related to WIN-

Kristin was not happy at the multinational corporate sector she was working in, which she thought was set up for men to thrive and did not serve women at all. So she took a decision to promote a more feminine approach in the workplace, for the benefit of both women. WIN’s work is centred upon its Global Conference, which takes place annually featuring 40 forums and sessions, including eight plenaries over three days, this flagship event always kicks off with a global overview, moves on to conscious business, leadership, professional and career development, and concludes by focusing on personal growth and wholeness. This year conference is taking place in Athens, from 2nd-4th Oct. Please visit the link to register.

Kristin transformed her vision of ‘bringing a more feminine, global and sustainable vision into work, communities and life’ through the creation of the WINConference. The mission is to inspire women worldwide by empowering, developing and connecting leaders in a way that integrates feminine values, global awareness and authentic contribution.

She was born in Kristiansund, Norway. She comes from an artistic family. Her father was a photographer and she was raised in his studio. She was influenced by her mother who was a nurse, a large family and surrounded by nature and the ocean.

In 1997, she started Women’s International Networking (WIN ) while after working for JPMorgan and Citibank in Milan. WIN was initially created as an umbrella organization for international women’s associations and as a learning platform to prepare leaders for the future. She became involved in the international community in Milan and saw an opportunity to create support for women working globally. In 1998, thanks to sponsorship from SDA Bocconi School of Management and with the help of a group of enthusiastic volunteers and companies the first WINConference was born.

In 2002 at WIN the international women’s associations who were part of it joined PWN Paris in creating the European Professional Women’s Network (PWN) contributing to the success of the initiative. From that moment WIN intensified its focus on thought leadership, globalizing the WINConference and on company learning events whilst PWN continued the part of activities that had to do with the networks.

WIN’s work is centred upon its Global Conference, which takes place annually in a city of global renown with excellent international transport links. Featuring 40 forums and sessions, including eight plenaries over three days, this flagship event always kicks off with a global overview, moves on to conscious business, leadership, professional and career development, and concludes by focusing on personal growth and wholeness.

Kristin holds an MSc in business and marketing from BI, Oslo and an MBA in Economics from Bocconi University in Milan. She has taken numerous courses in coaching, psychology, Kundalini Yoga, Zen and studied acting and creativity at Studio De Fazio in Rome. She is the mother of Leonardo.

In 2010, Kristin has been the winner of The International Alliance of Women (IAW) Award. Founded in 1904 and based in Geneva, the International Alliance of Women has general consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council.

With more than 22 years of daily experiences working with women from all continents, Kristin believes women’s authentic and empowered leadership is a vital responsibility of our time.

Womenlines takes pleasure to share about a powerful campaign in Nigeria named ‘Building Young Entrepreneurs(BYE)’. Founder Bright Oloyo, Motivational speaker, Business consultant, mentor, career coach and C.E.O of Black Pride Multipurpose Company, with a collection of seasoned Entrepreneurs from around the world are embarking on a rescue mission “Building Young Entrepreneurs” across Nigeria, Africa’s most populous black nation. This campaign is based on the theme ‘Steering  Young  Minds Towards Entrepreneurship and  Good  Leadership.’ Considered to be the biggest campaign running over 1000 schools across Nigeria. Motivational speaker and CEO of Self Development Success Fran Allen is sharing with Womenlines why she has decided to support BYE campaign-

Using my life experiences to mentor, guide, direct and up-lift others has been the hallmark of my life. I don’t believe that we go through any of the experiences of our lives for no reason. From the beginning to the end – our lives have meaning and purpose – whether we know or believe it. I was taught as a child by my shero’s (Frances Kelley, Mother; Belle Kelley, Grandmother; and Alfie Kelley, Aunt), that nothing was impossible for me if I wanted it bad enough and was willing to do the work necessary to achieve my goal. I lived my life by this belief and passed the same to my children.

As the years have passed I have shared this belief with all the young people I have had the honour to mentor and advise. While their names are too many to recall, they know who they are and that they all hold a special place in my heart!  Now I have decided to open this same desire to help and commitment to pour into the children of Nigeria, through the BYE Campaign. I know in the depths of my soul that these deserving children have immeasurable potential, skills and talents. It is my express intention to inspire them to search for their own greatness and work to develop it into the powerful contribution to their families, communities, nation and the world that they and only they possess.

This is my generational investment for securing the stability of humanity moving forward and past my time on this earth.

We all can do something. This is my something. It’s GO TIME!!!

DREAM HUGE, WORK YOUR BUTT OFF, and NEVER EVER QUIT!!!!!

Fran Allen

CEO of Self  Development Success

Womenlines is delighted to have Jahnavi Katti, founder of training company ‘Keykonnecct’ and host of YouTube show ‘Story2Satori’ as Social Branding and Success Mindset  Influencer at Womenlines. Jahnavi is having 20 years of experience in coaching and training and now she wants to share her knowledge across the globe. Jahnavi is sharing her knowledge with Womenlines readers through her Social Branding Series…

When I was eighteen I read a Chinese proverb “Good intentions are not enough”.It took me a long time to understand the meaning of the words utterly “Be Yourself” is like “follow your bliss” these words are like gems that fall under the category of well-intentioned but infuriating Its meant to inspire you but it makes you think how unclear you are about your path in life It may mean, it’s hard to figure out what you want, don’t get stressed, just go with the flow, do what you love and the money will follow. But do you know what’s that something which is just outside your reach and you can’t figure out what it is that will give you the bliss? If someone tells you to do something that you like and you can’t remember a single thing you like.If someone says you will be happy if you do what you like and if you do what interests you then you will be good at it and if you are good at it then you will make money. You want nothing more than to be successful!

You want to be a girl boss have girl power. You want to be more than just a mediocre person, you want to hustle hard You want to follow your dreams provided you knew where your dreams were! Now you can do some soul searching, find out what you are really jealous of , what do you want that your friends have, have you heard your own Story what is it that you have secretly hidden deep within the crevices of your mind, let’s unearth the treasure house. Our Story is there to teach us some great lessons, so tell me how you can get out of your own way by trusting your own crazy ideas.

You deserve to have everything that you think you want no matter how much ridiculous you may think it is for you to have it. We will make sure you admit to yourself what you want, however difficult it may be for you to do it and you will learn to handle your fear and start taking baby steps to take actions however small they may be. We will set the ball rolling, you will definitely get results but first, you must identify that you cannot get the results doing the same things you have been doing all these days. You must identify something tangible may be a specific amount of money, a job, a relationship a particular lifestyle to achieve results. Specificity is the Key! I will teach you a process where you can work with your ego if it comes in the way of breaking down your exact want, which should really be what you want and not what you think you should want.

Email me at jaahnavikatti@gmail.com Do the scary thing, take the risk I want to hear about what you want, let’s discuss about your dreams, tell me your Story!!

Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome Shirley Taylor as a guest Influencer at Womenlines panel. Shirley is a leading authority on business writing and communication skills and an international bestselling author. In her article, Shirley wants organizations to check which style of email communication are they following and she is also sharing tips on how  to add a human touch in communication?

I’m so glad to have received a great response to my message recent article ‘Don’t write like a robot. Make a human difference’. You may remember that I compared two different emails, one that sounded like a robot, and another that sounded like a human being.

This week, let’s explore the different styles of communication throughout history. Whatever the era, it seems to me that communication has always been rather like a dance.

1919: The Waltz

In the first half of the 20th century, the wheels of commerce turned very slowly, so communication was a slow dance, rather like a waltz. People kept each other at a distance, they built relationships very slowly, as they moved around the dance floor… one two three, one two three, one two three.

And yes, when they wrote letters and memos, on their manual typewriters, they still danced the waltz, with their long sentences, formal language, and passive voice.

2019: The Cha-Cha-Cha

Today, we need to get to know people quickly, so we are more informal and friendly. Today our dance is like a cha-cha-cha. It’s lively, full of energy, a little playful… one two cha-cha-cha, one two cha-cha-cha, one two cha-cha-cha.

However, something strange happens when we put our fingers on our computer keyboard to write an email. Suddenly our writing becomes more formal, with passive voice, long sentences, and flowery words. We switch back to a waltz!

Today, many people have two voices – one voice for speaking and a different voice for writing.

Let me share an example from a huge organisation I worked within one of the most modern countries in the world – Singapore. Their aims were to stand out from the competition with a customer-friendly attitude that’s approachable, warm, and caring.

If you called their hotline, you may hear a recorded message saying, “Hey, we’re sorry, we’re on another call right now. Hang tight and we’ll be with you very soon.”

But then… when they emailed customers, they were writing things like this:

This email sounds like something that could be written by a robot that’s programmed to perfection.

What’s happening in your organisation?

Are your emails like a cha-cha-cha? Do they sound like a human voice, friendly and warm, with everyday language and active voice?

Or are your emails more like a waltz? Do they sound like a robot, cold, formal and distant, very monotone and template?

In business today, we need to get things done quickly, we need to connect, build relationships and create trust. This will happen quicker with the human voice.

Let’s work together to make a human difference

I would love to work with you and your organisation to bring back the human touch to all your communications. Let’s encourage all our teams to make a human difference. Check out my popular signature business writing programme here. I can customise this training especially for you and do this as half-day, one-day or two-day. Just let me know what works for you.
