Womenlines takes pleasure to welcome Melissa Maria, Principal, Global Indian International School, SMART Campus Singapore! Melissa has shared her insightful thoughts which can alert many parents and make them mindful about little habits which are causing stress in kids

Among the most popular series on television, these days involve young kids competing for the top spot in various talent-based activities. Some are competing as the best junior dancer, others in best junior singer, best speller, best so-and-so. The contests are tough, the kids are unbelievably talented, the audience is enthralled and entertained. Praise comes from all corners, standing ovations are a norm, confetti is showered at every move, and instant gratification becomes an addiction.

What happens when a contestant is eliminated and the adulation stops? What happens to those who don’t make it? How do they cope? Do they go back to normal life like normal kids? Are we putting our youngsters through too much stress? While, on one hand, everyone complains of exam stress; there are other kinds of stresses that are ignored by the society as a whole performance Stress, Stress of Meeting Expectations, Stress caused by hormonal changes! And there are others. Teachers expecting every student to understand every concept taught in class is the stress of its own kind parents expecting children to perform better in every way compared to the neighbour’s kid is stress.

Elders expecting the young to conform to norms and tow the line is stress. Society expecting youngsters to rein in their energy and curb their enthusiasm is stress and youngsters expected to excel within all these restrictions, is a level of stress one can only imagine So when they choose secret outlets to relieve stress – away from the prying and judging eyes of the society – can they be faulted? Can we fault them for cheating in exams when the pressure to perform is exceptionally high? Can we fault them for back-answering, when they are metaphorically gagged and bound, in every other way? Can we fault them for being cruel and uncaring, when as a society we are not trying to understand their emotions? Am wondering what our response to the above will be Maybe they need guidance without preaching. Maybe they need silence without lectures, maybe they need encouragement without fear of failure. As adults, is it our job to show them the right direction or clip their wings? But before that maybe we need to think: Is my kid under pressure? What can I do to reduce the stress?

The Pandemic time has been challenging for women, especially for women entrepreneurs. As businesswomen have experienced negative effects, whether managing the finance for the business or managing their team. It is almost like a crisis situation for them. How can women entrepreneurs leverage a crisis into creativity?

Linda Fisk has shared an incredibly insightful article enlightening us with a 4-point plan to leverage crisis with creativity. Linda Fisk is a multi-award-winning leader, keynote speaker, podcast host, author and university professor dedicated to amplifying and extending the success of other high-calibre business leaders

The global pandemic has been an unmitigated calamity on a number of levels. But in some industries, this time of unprecedented change has also been a time of remarkable advancement spurring exciting new innovations, as firms come up with new ways to manage disrupted supply chains, remote workforces, and shifting consumer demands.  In fact, some leading companies are actually changing the very way they innovate.

Creativity is essential to creating key breakthroughs during times of radical change and intense pressure and expressing new possibilities and options during the rebuilding process. The economic downturn created by the global pandemic can be used to induce creativity, and creativity, in turn, can induce growth and innovation.

The costs associated with innovation have changed dramatically in the past year as well. The crisis has emboldened managers to move faster and to quickly launch new ideas – oftentimes with entire customer segments.  Doing anything novel and new in a legacy business typically involves considerable time and money, because of a long-standing corporate culture of risk-avoidance.  But, now, we’re seeing transformational innovations, and radically new solutions, introduced at a fraction of the time and cost, compared to a year ago.

But, even as companies continue to preserve cash, the defining feature of this innovation revolution, driven by the global pandemic, is breakneck speed. Companies are being forced to take risks and question their assumptions.  They are finding relationships between things that aren’t as readily apparent and leveraging the strengths of their core offerings in new ways – overnight.

Getting inspired in times of adversity and uncertainty, and exploring new solutions to emerging challenges, can be daunting.  Here are four quick tips to help you reassign all pre-conceived concepts of structure and routine for your business:

  • When pressure is high, eliminate the distractions.

Turn off your cell phone, don’t check email, and focus on the issue to be tackled in a quiet space away from interruptions and distractions.  Routine meetings and schedules may need to be suspended, and the cadence of customary check-in meetings may need to postpone.

  • React to concerns with understanding and support.

In times of enormous change, when you are questioning the most fundamental aspects of your business, your staff is likely to feel anxious.  Allow people to voice their concerns, point to problems, and express their apprehension with understanding, support and help.

  • Celebrate progress, and even small wins, in public.

People value work environments where creativity and innovation are supported, valued and recognized.  People want to deeply engage in their work and make real progress.  Acknowledging and celebrating progress, and even small wins can be deeply motivating to staff.

  • Be transparent and overcommunicate.

In a sea of uncertainty, when teams are being asked to create new options and possibilities, transform processes, consider new products and services, and focus on innovation in every aspect of the business, some staff members may feel insecure and anxious.  Reassuring your staff and being more communicative and transparent during this time is essential.

New business models and innovations will emerge from the COVID-19 crisis, as they did during the last major economic downturn in 2008-2009.  For all business leaders, this can be a practice that becomes an integral part of your culture, not just as a revenue source for the current situation but as a revenue accelerator in the future.  You may find yourself marvelling at people’s endless capacity to connect, innovate and create.

ZAAMMUS – ZAALOUK + HUMMUS DIP

Ingredients:

Zaalouk

Hummus

METHOD

Zaalouk

• Remove 3 vertical strips of skin from each aubergine. Discard the vertical strips and dice the aubergines in large cubes. Removing a few stripes allows keeping the zaalouk softer (less skin) when prepared, however, feel free to leave them if desired.

• In a medium-sized pan, heat the olive oil and add all the ingredients. Cover over medium-low heat until the vegetables are soft, about 25 minutes. Stir occasionally to make sure the vegetables don’t stick to the pan.

• Uncover, mash the vegetables, and leave over medium heat until all liquids evaporate.

• Refrigerate until needed, up to two days.

Hummus

• Place the drained chickpeas and the baking soda in a large deep skillet over medium heat. Cover the chickpeas with water. Leave until the chickpeas are soft and cooked, this will take about 30 to 40 minutes.

• Once cooked, drain the chickpeas, place them in a food processor along with the rest of the ingredients, and process until you obtain the desired smoothness.

• Add more water to adjust the consistency if desired.

• Refrigerate until needed, up to two days.

A successful business has to be involved, it has to be fun, and it has to exercise its employee’s creative instinct. For any workplace, it is very essential to take care of their employee’s comfort zone too, as they are putting efforts to make your business grow. With this comes the concept of “Breakroom” at the workplace.

This concept is very prominently seen in the American work culture, which is now been followed by others too. You need to understand the major reason behind it, which is ultimately profitable to your business.

Our team has researched and come across 7 major features/benefits of breakroom at the workplace:

  1. It is a place where you can relax, rejuvenate, and can get refreshed, after working for long hours.
  2. The best part of this place is, here people from other departments can also get a chance to interact.
  3. Also, it is considered to be a good place to have an open communication between the executive and those working for them.
  4. It is considered to be a place, which gives you and your colleagues a sense of community.
  5. It is good to take a break, which ultimately balance you and your mental state.
  6. Providing breakroom at workplace, attracts more young talents.
  7. By this, you are providing a healthy living atmosphere in your company, which keeps your employees happier, and focused.

So, looking at all these benefits of the breakroom, companies who haven’t yet given a thought to it, should definitely try to figure out, and provide even a small-sized place like this to their hard-working employees. The more your employees are comfortable at the workplace, the more will be the output, the more will business will grow.

Ayo Sokale is a motivational speaker on a mission, to improve corporate equality, sustainability, and social responsibility. With a successful career in civil engineering, we sat down with Ayo to discover the secret to her career growth and how she engages audiences as a presenter. From inclusion to plastic consumption, do not miss our official Q&A with the social justice champion, Ayo Sokale.

What do diversity and inclusion mean to you and why are they important?
“Diversity and inclusion mean bringing a range of people together, regardless of their differences. This could be racial, ethnic, social, economic, geographic, academic, or whatever.
“I think inclusion is the most important factor. Inclusion means to make sure people can fully take part as their best selves. For example, an organization could have a diverse range of people, however, without making the environment more inclusive, it doesn’t allow employees to really embrace their job or show up as their best selves.
“Here’s an example. You may hire a new person and they may be a wheelchair user, but your office plan has narrow walkways and a lack of accessibility. This means you’ve got a diverse workplace, but it’s not inclusive to that person’s needs and therefore they can’t show up as their best selves.
“They come to work thinking about how they’re going to maneuver around the office, how they’re going to move around meetings. And this means they’re not able to show up in the ways we want people to. We want people to show up in their best way, where they feel included and nurtured.”
What are some small changes individuals could make in their everyday lives to live more sustainably?
“I’m one of the Institution of Civil Engineers’ water superheroes – I’m called Ego Angel!
“Here are some top tips to live more sustainably. Having a shorter shower makes a huge difference to water consumption. Secondly, why not walk or cycle [to work]? It is a fantastic way to look after your health while also looking after the planet.
“Why not switch your plastic products for better reusable options? Switch your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo one, your plastic bag for a reusable one, or even your shampoo and conditioner bottles for bars.
“They work just as effectively!”
As an experienced freelance presenter, what is the key to effective communication?
“As a freelance presenter, I think the key to effective communication is understanding your audience. Who is your audience and what are you trying to convey to them? If they’re an audience of my peers, I’d probably [present] very differently compared to an audience of secondary school kids!
“Once you know who your audience is, you have to understand the context of your speech – who’s speaking before you? Where are you in the line-up? Is it before lunch and people are completely zoned out? How do you need to really engage the audience to make sure they take on board the message you want to convey?
“Also, make sure you slow down! Calm down and ensure you speak as authentically as possible. People know when you’re speaking from [the heart] and they know when you’re not. And I think if you really want to engage people, you’ve got to start by engaging them in you.”
What is the secret to your career growth?
“The secret to my career growth? I don’t think there’s any particular secret to career growth, but I do credit three things and one of them is clarity. It means asking the question, ‘what does career success look like to me?’. I think it is so important because if you understand your goals, you actually have a better chance of achieving them.
“This leads me nicely to number two: growth. With a growth mindset and a clear goal in mind, you can then evaluate your skills, your knowledge, or your experience, and then you can assess where you are and what you need to do to get to where you want to be.
“And finally, I do think reflection is critical. In my early career as a graduate civil engineer, I really threw myself into reflecting and thinking about what I was learning. I think this is really, really pertinent. We would write these quarterly reports, and it would allow me to understand the technical part of the project and what I was gaining from them – what are the tangible lessons learned, and what do I need to do in the future as a result?
“I think all of this allows you to really embrace the learning process and make it more effective. Without it, you can’t get the most out of your growth experience.”

Womenlines guest contributor Maiye Waller from North CarolinaUnited States, is sharing this month about a fundraising event ‘First Annual Masquerade Benefit Ball’ which is upcoming on November 14th, 2021 at 7:30 by her organisation ‘The Mace Anthony Williamson Foundation and The Loss Group Project’ in Florida. This event is going to celebrate survivors of Domestic Violence, Loss, Homelessness, Suicide (a friend, a family member of the victim, or even have a story of surviving their own attempt)!

Empowering The Community Through Unity

As we wrap up October, the year is just about to kick off what we know is the busiest time of the year. The Holidays. Regardless of Covid 19, We can’t forget about the two most important holidays of the year, Thanksgiving and Christmas. With these wonderful times often come those tough times. Some people don’t have a big family, some people don’t have a family at all, some people have family, but it doesn’t feel like it. I personally know some people who may have a small social circle or even lack opportunities for socialization due to their work or children. Whatever it may be, no one deserves to be alone or depressed during this time of the year. We commonly speak on togetherness and giving during these times. This year more than ever we should be coming together. There has been a rise in Suicides and Domestic Violence cases since the start of Covid here in the US. “The increased incidence of psychosocial problems, exacerbation of pre-existing psychiatric disorders and fear of infection, uncertainty, isolation, unemployment, stress and mass panic have all contributed to one of the most concerning causes of mortality: suicides” (World Health Organization, 2020).

Now, as many of you’ll have read previously, I speak a lot about my son Mace. He was born right on time! I say that because it was my favorite time of the year! The Holidays. But after I lost him, I realized that those same holidays would now be dreadful. I only dreamed of what these times of the year would be like for us. I barricaded myself in my apartment. I didn’t celebrate the holidays like I used to. I was away from my family, and I honestly wasn’t in the best place at the time to just book a flight and go home. The Holidays were beginning to feel like the longest, darkest, most isolating time of the year.
As the years went on and I went on to find joy and light again, those holidays got a little easier to handle. However, I still have my moments. I know that anyone who has experienced a loss of any kind can relate to that feeling.
With Covid 19 hitting us how it did last year and still being ever so present, we need to come together. Covid has caused a huge rift in the socialization that we are so used to, the togetherness that we all need most.

As Leaders, we have to also let the members of our community, (the survivor) know that they are not alone and that there are resources out there for them. There are organizations that have events that are mainly about bringing the community together and showing them that we are all better united than divided. It’s not hard to pick up someone when you see them down. One of the best ways to help deal with isolation and depression during the Holiday season is to reach out to friends or family for support or get involved in your community.

This month, The Mace Anthony Williamson Foundation and The Loss Group Project will bring the community together for our First Annual Masquerade Benefit Ball on November 14th, 2021 at 7:30 pm. This fundraising event will be celebrating survivors of Domestic Violence, Loss, Homelessness, Suicide (a friend, a family member of the victim, or even have a story of surviving their own attempt). If you are here to tell the story, you made it! You are a survivor. I felt this event was a need in our community but more importantly before the Holiday isolation or depression can hit. If you would like to join us and our partners for this event, please follow the links below. I have also listed the SUICIDE PREVENT HOTLINE phone number as well as the DOMESTIC VIOLENCE hotline. If you would like to learn more about The Mace Anthony Williamson Foundation please visit our website.
